In my opinion... if you haven't used both... you can't comment on which is better.
I have run the passport 8500 and the V1 in the same vehicles on the same roads.

I sold the Passport to my buddy and everything I drive has a V1 in it.

If you don't think the arrows are worth it... try living without them once you have tried them. They give you precious information that you need "to speed".
My V1s have paid for themslevs about 1000 times over in "saved my *** again" tickets.

Luckily they don't use laser around where I live so a radar detector is really useful.

Here's my write-up on the Beltronics unit I have. I've been pretty happy with it.

I have 3 Escort Passports all wireless models. They have never let me down, plus no annoying cord to mess with.

I'm thinking about getting their remote system installed. Expensive but anything that can get you out of a ticket it worth it.

I too have the V1. It's worth every pennie. I've even beat laser a couple of times. The arrows are the best thing. It let's me know where it's coming from. It will also detect junk radar detectors since the cheapies can set better one's off. It's also upgradable. So if new radar technology comes out you can send it off to be ugraded. I think there's a small fee for it but it beats spending another $300-$400 on another detector which is what will happen if you buy any other radar detector. I like leaving mine on to detect all bands just in case. I pretty much travel the same path everyday so i know what areas are going to be false. This will happen with all detectors unless you choose a specific band to detect. Hands down this is the one to have!

I went cheap and got a top of the line Cobras. I always see where the others are compared to them, but only a lower model and not their best. After using it a few trips I think I wasted my money. It does do a very good job, but picks up everything and way too many false readings.
Buglar alarms and cash registers etc.. Maybe they all do, I don't know..
I like my cobra. Mine will pick up everything under the sun on highway mode. Though I leave it on highway mode just in case. I usually leave the volume on low and see it flashing. That bright blue screen very easily catches my eye when it goes off. My Package said its the XRS797, but they don't use that name for it anymore. I think the one I have is now called the XRS9830.
Yeah I just took my cobra back now. It started in with even more beeping and chirping and that friggin voice that comes on it got on my nerves. I guess I just hadn't drivin through the right part of town just yet, but boy when I did I couldn't stand the thing.

Passport 8500 X-50 manufactured by Escort. It has blistering sensitivity on Ka digital radar.

I'm gonna be getting my taxes back in about a month or so and I've been doing some reading on radar/laser detectors and jammers.

I personally think I'll like the escort 8500 X50 because it not only is a good unit, but because it comes with an optional blue LCD. Thats important to me because I think blue lights are slightly less conspicuous than a red LCD. I don't know about you but I don't want cops lookin in an seein my detector when I'm on the road......you'll be askin for more touble I think. I live in Cali and while radar detectors are legal, LASER JAMMERS are not. I plan on gettin one of those too. Apparently a couple of Jammers made by BLINDER work well. So I plan on potentially getting one with some licence plate spray. I'm goin for the gusto

Blue might not be that conspicuous! It is a higher energy (shorter wavelength) and may attract more attention that something red. That is why I detest HID headlights with lens focusing apparati!

I usually run mine with the red readout in the dimmest mode or dark mode. I go strictly by the sounds: beep(x) brap (k) or geigercounter clicks (Ka) = cops!

Well here u go. Here some good places to find what your looking for......
The first place is a website with good info on how radar works and all that...
The guy that owns this company use to be a cop and now sell radar detectors, he has great test for them, I would definately check this site out if u are planin on buying a Detector in the future.

www.radarbusters.com

And the second site seems to have great prices on alot of detectors...My personal favorite is the Whistler brand, not quite bell. or Valentine but a good trade off of quality prices and good detectors and they are leaps and bounds ahead of the lower brands like Cobra and the like.
