Alright...before I post I'll say that I've researched into all the radio posts already but don't really understand most of it.

Basically all I want to do is replace the head unit (just the radio) with an Alpine system that's iPod ready.

A couple questions that I couldn't seem to get a clear answer on.

1) Some say that I need to replace the WHOLE stereo system (speakers and all). Is this true? I don't really want to spend 700 dollars to get my damn iPod working in my car (yes I know I can by an FM transmitter but they sound terrible compared to a direct link, already considered that). And I want the new deck becaue of the infamous skipping problem with the shaker system.

2) If I understand correctly there is a harness that will allow me to put in a new radio and hook it up to the current system. Can someone show me a link to exactly which parts I need to buy to be able to do this?

3) Is this something I can do in my garage? Or do I need to take it to a shop? If so, are there instructions somewhere to remove the radio?

Keep in mind I'm stereo illiterate...so the technical stuff goes way over my head.

Why are you asking specific instructions if you are stereo illiterate? You will be likely to not understand the answers... I recoommend going to a local stereo shop and letting them handle the install.

Wow...that was helpful. [sm=boosign.gif]

I'm asking specific questions on how to replace a radio. In my opinion this could be answered without being overly technical. In other words...rather than assuming I know precisely what I'm talking about, assume that I'm a novice when it comes to audio systems and would like to learn more. I'm asking questions that would allow me to 1) Learn more about the topic and 2) Find a solution to the problem. I don't want to be a jerk, but I thought your reply was somewhat condescending.

Back to topic...

Specifically, after having done some research I understand that there is a harness that I need that would allow me to install a proprietary deck without having to replace the whole speaker set as well. I've also found the working papers on how to remove the radio (and successfuly done just that) and all that so really all I need is a way to hook up the new deck. However I can't seem to find a name or part number for this thing anywhere. Does anyone know where I can order this harness? Specifically I've read about some people being able to put in an iPod ready Alpine deck, anyone had experience with this?

Sounded like good advise to me.

If you go in there too clueless, though, you might as well go in wearing a sign that says "F**k me with a cactus." Doesn't hurt to have at least an idea of what you want done before you tell 'em "have at it."

As for the harness...you might want to check, as people say, stereo shops. If you have a Tweeter store, or a store that deals exclusively with car electronics, you probably want to try them first.

I've been to the local audio shops, but I was getting conflicting information about what can and can't be done with this system. However, just a few minutes ago I was at Starbucks getting a frappuccino (I know, I know...how lame) when I noticed a dude with a stang with an aftermarket stereo. He's got the shaker 500, and said that it was a simple matter of getting the right harness, which he gave me the name of, and essentially taking out the stereo and putting the new one with the correct mounting kit.

Upon further research I found the harness, ordered it and will try the install myself. According to the ford dealer this won't void any warranties or anything, and according to the shop I called about the issue it's a pretty simple task to remove the old unit and put the new one in. No soldering or anything crazy like that. So if anyone is interested I'll let them know how it goes.

As for my previous post...I truly meant it in the sincerest way possible. The last poster got it right, I'm just trying to get up to speed on something before I make a decision about it. So the intent of my original post was simply to ask the questions I didn't have the answers too. Apologies if the replying post came across as rude, but I still stand by the "condescending" comment. My $.02...HOWEVER, to the first person that replied. The crutchfield link was a good place, thanks.

In any case...thanks for reading!

I love how people try to make things seem easier than they really are sometimes.. When I had my Maxima the guy at SoundAdvice told me it would be a cinch to take out my old headunit and replace it with a new one... what he failed to tell me is i would have to literally take the entire dash off. Im pretty sure the Mustangs arent built too different from this. There were a total of about 50 screws/bolts ( which happened to be split between phillips, flat head and hex screws.. dunno why the flip they cant use the same damn screw throughout the car) and a total of like.. 15 plastic dash pieces that had to be removed. then i had to pull the old headunit out, unhook the wiring, fit the new one in with the correct mounting brackets etc, hook the wiring back, and then put the dash back together. I got it done but it took me about 4-5 hours.. not bad considering ive never done it before and i only cause minimal damage to the dash pieces... but hell.. no wonder they charge people 100+ bucks to install one of these.

Yeah it shouldn't void any warranties because you're not messing with the car's original wiring. The harness is spliced onto the head unit's wiring (just follow a diagram for what wire is what) and it just plugs right into the factory plug.
