Well, which is the "Valid statistic"? 50% or 70%? And what city, county, state are your statistics for? Oh, and FYI Birdieman, the country IS bankrupt. I find it hard to believe that any educated person thinks that traffic fines are going to make a dent in an eight trillion dollar defecit any time soon. Thats with a "t". And I laugh that you think they play that big a part in local government, let alone the national government. Please, stick your heads back in their holes in the ground and save your one-sided "facts" for the "Enquirer". Maybe those "facts" stick in po-dunk one-officerville, but they're not going to in any decent-sized town, and especially a big city. Parking tickets? Well, now you are getting somewhere.
They do play a big part. They play a big part in meeting budgets.

Here are a couple of examples:

Desperate to boost revenue, city extends ticket amnesty

From the above article: "The extended amnesty will give City Hall a better chance to come near the higher end of its goal of generating $4 million to $10 million from Chicago's first parking ticket amnesty since 1987."

The high end of $4 million to $10 million (meaning closer to $10 million), not on all parking tickets, just overdue parking tickets in Chicago. If they get that much money from overdue parking tickets alone, how much do you think they get from ALL traffic tickets?

Pedestrians Could Get Fined For Crossing On Red

From the above article: "Although improving traffic flow is supposedly behind the crackdown plan, the cash-strapped Daley administration has no doubt calculated the enormous revenue flow that might result."

Enormous revenue from jaywalkers. How enormous do you think the revenue is from ALL traffic tickets?

$500 fee added to traffic tickets

From the above article (Hoffman Estates is a suburb of Chicago):

"Village officials said Monday that the new fee will partially offset rising administrative and court costs associated with criminal arrests in the village and could generate nearly $800,000 a year in additional revenue. It is modeled after similar plans in Hanover Park, Rolling Meadows and Waukegan."

$800,000 a year in additional revenue, from adding a $500 fee to only the most serious infractions of driving under the influence, driving without a valid license, and certain drug- and firearm-related offenses (not all, but certain ones). How much more revenue do you think they make from ALL infractions/traffic tickets?

If you seriously think traffic tickets don't play a big part in the revenue of local governments (and yes, in big cities), then you don't know what your'e talking about.

Excellent reply! Paid fines from traffic violations play a big part in the states revenue. Every night court rooms are filled with violaters that will have to pay some sort of fine. Not to mention the people that don't go to court and just pay their ticket or take traffic school. People are always getting lesser violations to avoid points on their license but still have to pay a fine. The fine is all the court is concerned about. It's such an easy way to gain revenue for that state. Most of this stems from the state's inability to budget tax payer dollars. It's pretty evident on the highways everyday. I do a lot of highway driving. I will notice for sometime there are no cops or speed traps then one day they're all over the place. If the state is concerned about saftey then there would be a police presence all the time. I don't by into the whole safety thing with traffic cops. I know some are sincere and do care but most don't. Especially the ones setting speed traps. If a cop is concerned about safety just sitting on the side of the road in plain sight with lights flashing would slow down traffic. But there's no revenue in doing that so they hide and set speed traps. Don't even get me started on parking tickets. That has to be one of the lamest violations ever created. Minus the idiots that park in front of fire hydrants and fire lanes. I don't want to hear how traffic fines go into the roadway budget either. Most states have bad roads with uneven driving surfaces, pot holes, etc. causing unsafe driving conditions. Still think the state is concerned about your safety? I'm going to stop now because i could write a novel on how bad most traffic violations are and if the state could better budget tax payer dollars there would not be a need for most of them. The sad thing is it will only continue to get worse and more violations will be created with greater fines.

Doesn't matter what anyone here really thinks. Than said here's my $.02. You're under 20, driving a Mustang GT, spinning tires (showing off)........[sm=bustedsign.gif]

The judge will get some amusement with your attempt to justify 90% throttle to get up to speed. He didn't site you for speeding and at your age, you don't have that much experience driving. If you want to spin your tires find and empty parking lot or go to the track. My family and I drive on the public roads, we have enough trouble avoiding accidents as it is. We don't need someone driving like that in public.

PS: Your post would probably make this an open/shut case in court. (I'm not a lawer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night).

Good luck,

Well I'm not 20 yrs old, about twice that actually.
Just to set the table here, no points on my license, not even a ticket in 15years.
When I see comments like, "my family and I drive on the public roads..." I just cringe, the reason, I see more accidents caused by "safe" drivers than I do people that take off from a light at 90% throttle. I drive quickly, which is to say given several factors I will accelerate quickly from a light, or even a stop sign. I drive what some would call aggresive, fine, and I will argue that people that actually actually drive, and not just ride in their cars are much more likely to AVOID accidents than someone that drives along oblivious to the world around them. I see it all the time. It isn't kids in Mustangs that scare me, it's map reading, makeup applying, egg mcmuffin eating, coffee drinking, turning around to yell at the kids, non turn signal using "careful" drivers that I watch out for.

Not to mention the redneck that has no tailgate with crap in the bed that could fly out and hit someones car causing a highway accident. What about the vehicle in front of me with smoke pouring out the back that smells so bad and obviously not emissions safe that makes it impossible for me to enjoy a ride with the windows down or air conditioning on for that matter. Does that not make it difficult for one to breathe? What about the impatient driver inching his way into the intersection before the light turns green. What about all the elderly people that haven't been tested in who knows how long. Are these violators being caught too? No, because they aren't breaking any obvious traffic law even though they are causing unsafe driving conditions. Still think the state cares about your safety or do they just want that fine?

I've spoken with several of our police officers at our restaurant about this matter (they provide security.)

They have a quota to meet every month.

Why? To make the city/county money.

Plain. Simple. Economics.

People + Tickets = Money

You forgot a section in your equation!

People + Tickets - Officers, squadcars, equipment, support staff = very little to no money

Not so simple if you are looking past the stereotypes.

As far as a quota. Good for them. I don't. Neither does most of my county.

And I am sure the "I'd gladly pay your wages, just drop the points." will get you far. I hope you do say exactly that in court. Why wouldn't you show any respect? You don't give it, you don't deserve it, pal! I think with that remark, I would have written the ticket too! And I'd be sure to let the prosecutor know what a punk you've actually been!

Even after all of the advice given by the gamut of people on these forums, you still have the peas to say crap like that. You are the kid who gives all the other kids bad reps. Good luck with your court appearance.
