Default Accelerometer??

Yeah so I had someone ask me how much HP my GT had today and sadly I was unable to answer them because I have never been to a dyno because well, there arent any in my area that I know of.. and I dont have the money lol.. SO, they told me I should get an accelerometer for my car. I didnt want to sound like a total idiot to this person because I kinda look up to them sooo...Can anyone enlighten me on what this thing is? Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

It'd be a G-Tech or the like. Measures 1/4 mile times, acceleration forces and some do HP as well. Its a handheld unit that mounts on the dash, you calibrate it and then make your runs. It estimates the rest. Fairly accurate from what I've heard.

Their webpage seems to be broken at the moment but the site is www.gtechpro.com

No prob. I have been mulling that over myself due to multiple trips to a dynotuner. Though if you don't have a dyno in the area, I would say its worth it. If not to just get an idea of HP, then just to play with it!

They can be quite innacurate, I've heard.

They are accurate if you calibrate them properly which is not at all hard to do. I have compared the numbers I get from mine to what I get on the track and they are very close. Close enough that I would say he difference is more likely to come from my inability to launch and shift exactly the same each time that any inaccuracy the acclerometer has.
The only trick is to make sure you calibrate it correctly. Follow the instructions exactly and you will get accurate results.

i heard that those g-tec things work really well as long as you have the weight of your car done properly

Well, since you show no HP-getting mods, just say "300 horsepower, sir"!

I have one. I have not been on the scales (using 3600), but I think the HP values are way off. You do HP runs through 2nd gear (to take wheelspin out of the equation). Their handbook says that the readings are not the same as a dyno, cause you have wind resistance to deal with. I got 205 on the two runs that I tried, and 305 after the KB install (not correcting for the extra weight).

I was going to run it on a nice flat road Saturday, but I saw a cop car turn onto the road behind me. I bet he was wondering why I was stopped dead in the road!

I have not compared it to the 1/4 mile strip time. There is no 1/4 track within 2 hours of here. I am going to do an 1/8 mile track testing next month though.
