Accelerometer??

RE: Accelerometer??
yah they were referring to a gtech pro or similar system. It has a accelerometer in it that reads hp and torque. Not very accurate in that realm though. it does real good on the 1/4 mile times and the Gforce radings. but due to the fact that HP is a products of Torque and RPM's...its hard to get a good reading.

I've got the G-Tech. It's really cool and seems accurate. I didn't have a problem calibrating at all.
base model is like $200 and for $300 you get this software where you can download and analyze your runs.
I highly recommned it.

Agree with CainMotorsports2102 on accuracy of HP and torque.
It's very precise in measuring acceleration and time, which is why the 60ft, 0-60 and 1/4 are all accurate.
But to get to torque you need vehicle weight (5000# vehicle accelerating at .8G's needs more torque than 3000# vehicle with same accel). This is a user input and may not be accurate if you just use mfgr's curb weight.
And to get HP, you need torque AND rpm's. G-Tech measures rpm's from a "signature" it reads through the cig lighter (acoustic? electrical?, dont know). But you have to calibrate the rpms by revving to 2K and 4K. Even after calibrating I am not sure RPMs are all that accurate.

In fairness to G-Tech, using 3600 pounds as a weight (and not adding 200 for my butt) probably introduces a fair bit of inaccuracy. I'm going to get the car weighed next week, then retest.
Then there is the issue of the stock "300 HP" GT. I think you have to multiply times 0.85? (manual trans) to account for driveline loss. So your RWHP would be around 255. Couple that to my weight inaccuracy and the unknown value of rolling and wind resistance, maybe the HP readings are not too far off.
I think the best use of this is for comparison of mods, launching technique, evaluation of wheelspin/clutch slippage, and judging shiftpoints based on HP/Torque graphs.
You can read through their manuals from the website's support tab:

RE: Accelerometer??
I have the g-tech RR. I have used it a few times on other cars but I also feel that the HP numbers are inaccurate. BUt the times are pretty correct. But it is a PITA to use in a heavily populated area given that you have to stop completely first.

Around these parts the local law enforcement divisions have a device that will tell you how fast you were going. Of course they cahrge a "fee" for the service. But they do come right to your car window to give you the results. They are very accurate. THey verify your results by holding a "get together" at the local municipal center to validate the officers claim. Everytime I ever went, the Officers results have never been questioned.
