Changing drivetrain fluids. How often?
Manual transmission and rear end oil. How often do you change these? I can't really find anything in my manual.
Any tricks or tips on replacing or knowing the correct level? I see the levels in the manual but thought there may be a pro trick.
thanks,

Let me say I'm an AVID/RABID believer in Redline Oil products and Tufoil www.tufoil.com
I couldn't wait to change out the engine, but, after communications with both Redline and Tufoil I waited till 4.6k before doing so. My feelings were helped a little cause I added a quart of Redline at around 2k miles. Tufoil is, of course, very fond of their product and said not even to think of adding before 5k miles. My last ride is a hopped up BMW four banger that needs to be revved to up the fun content, 261k on the car, 129k on the custom engine, a steady diet of Redline and Tufoil (machinest recomended Tufoil) 26 sets of tires in total, and the engine just SINGS!
Back to the tranny. Ford was nice, both drain and fill plugs simply take a 3/8" ratchet. Period. I drained. Tufoil recomended a 10% mix of Tufoil. I used Redline "D4 ATF". The "Tufoil" is pretty heavy in it's consistency. SO I put the 10% load in the first bottle/fill and by the time I had re-filled that container enough times to fill the trans, the Tufoil had all made it into the trans.
What really burned my butt, is that you don't need to do this a lot, I had a pump from before, and just at the last fill the damn thing broke! Had to go off and obtain another one! [:@]

After I had my gears installed I took my car into fo for the 10k mile service and asked about replacing the tranny fluid to get any shavings out but first of all it was 200 so I said no way and the technician said Ford reccomends every 100k miles so apparently it's 100k.
Right-on. I think I'll change them out at 10 thousand just to get the wear in shavings out and then do it again at 30k, 60k, 90k, etc...
I changed the engine oil at 500, 1000, 3000, 6000, 9000, etc.

Change the m-tranny fluid and rear end fluid between 3K and 5K to remove the debis after break-in. Use a good synthetic. Then change every 50K miles - shorter in the tranny if the shifting gets "notchy." The first change is by far the most important and the one few know to do!
This is a great reminder - I just rolled over on 6k miles and want to change both trans and rear fluids as well. The manual says Mercon ATF for the manual trans and 75W-140 + LSD additive for the rear. I've been happy with the manual shift action with Redline fluids - but have usually used their MTF. Does anyone have a recommendation for which ATF to use? Either the D4 ATF or Synthetic ATF?
