as the name applies its a coil spring over a shock. first a threaded housing is put onto your shock. then a large nut if you will srcews onto that. next your coil spring sets on top the nut. you can raise or lower your ride hieght by turning the nut up or down. you can raise or lower your car 1-2.5 inches on avg as each manufacturer is a little different. so all in all you can have a 1 inch drop on day and a 2 the next. hell you can change it everyday.

Those are sleeve coilovers (read: fake).

True coilovers are complete tuned spring and damper systems with at least a threaded body and lower spring perch for corner weighting (leveling the body when loaded w/driver, fuel, etc.). They can also include true ride height adjustment via a lower mount which is also threaded onto the body to lengthen or shorten it, as well as damping adjustments for bump (compression), rebound (extension), or both. The springs are usually industry or manufacturer standard sizes which can be interchanged for tuning.

+1 on above, i was just going over the basic's. as always you get what you pay for the sleeve type about 450.00 using your stock shocks, not recommended. a true coilover like tein, h&r ect... run 1300.00 to 2000.00+.

wow, are coil overs worth it? like i think i'm understanding it now so instead of getting like an "eibach prokit" you would get say for example tein coilovers?

yes you could get the coil overs. if you are going to lower your car more than an inch you should get new shocks that are the proper length. so if you bought ebach spring kit 250.00 + shocks 450.00 thats 700 and change. and you are stuck with whatever drop the springs provide like it or not. you may look at your car and say man i with the rear was 1/2 lower but too bad. with the coil over kit you drop the car to what YOU think looks good. besides that you also reduce unsprung weight which is always a good thing. the tein kit cost about 1100.00 for the regular and 1900.00 for the race kit. h&r kit about the same.

with coil overs, does it limit the other suspenson parts i can do ? like are coil overs only an alternative to lowering springs?

Full coilovers are an alternative to lowering springs and shocks. Sleeve coilovers are an alternative to lowering springs. They have no more bearing on the rest of the suspension than basic springs and shocks do. They don't prevent you from doing anything else. If anything they strongly encourage it.

The Tein SS, KW or H&R sets would probably perform nearly on par with the Tokicos and Eibach, though most likely would benefit from a slightly firmer spring than the Eibach and still having the advantage of adjustable spring perches. The Tein Flex would be a pretty big leap ahead.
