I was gonna recommend wax paper (butcher paper, as you called it), but the wax will definitely melt and oxidize your paint.

Try some thin silk, nylon, or lace.

Kriger, do you have any pics of what it looked like after you removed the panel? And could you maybe get in touch with who you bought it from and see what's up? Maybe it was just defective or something.

I USED SHEET OF TIN FOIL. IT FIT OVER MOST OF THE PAINTED PANEL. DOES ANYONE SEE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE TIN FOIL? IT HOLDS THE MAGNET GREAT AND PROTECTS THE PAINT.

As long as the tin foil doesn't decide to stick to the paint...

There should be care instructions with these things..

Remove when washing (I didn't always do this, it was becoming hard and brittle and most likely would have caused damage if I took it off when I was washing the car everytime)

Install/Reinstall on a dry surface (I always did this, but i guess leaving a soapy or waxy residue might and could have a chemical reaction with the magnet... ? not sure!)

When I washed it ...and didn't remove it... there was soap & water that got behind it, That could have played a roll it what happened. Not sure!

But taking it off everytime you wash it isn't a feasable opition.

Didja maybe put it on backwards with the viynl side down rather than the magnet side down? That would attribute to the melting.

I think that is exactly what happened. I can't see the magnet melting it would take a tremendous amount of heat. The magnets on my contractor truck have withstanded years of heat with no problems
