Default RE: Explain Drone

I have a catback system and my drone is a vibration and noise combination felt below my seat and in the central console.

Comes in an out, only when I'm traveling <20MPH and around 2K RPMs.

Bodyshop thinks it's caused by a cheap hangar fabrication made by the local muffler shop.

Default RE: Explain Drone

Drone is acoustical resonance--sound--that occurs at a particular frequency.

Drone happens becasue the exhaust system is basically a long pipe. Any pipe will resonate at a certain frequency, just like a pipe organ or other wind instrument. For our cars the "magic frequency" happens to be around 1700-1900 RPM. When the engine is turning at this speed, the sound coming out of the motor happens to be at the exact right frequency to start the exhaust gases in the pipe resonating at the pipe's natural frequency, so the sound gets louder.

Basically, on a droning exahust system, the exhaust sound will get very loud around this key frequency, but it is quieter both above and below that particular point. The forward speed of the car has nothing to do with it, nor does the exaust system hangers (though a bad hanger could make it sound louder in the cabin).

If you have drone you can get rid of it by using a chambered muffler, like a flowmaster, or by installing resonators.
