Custom Paint Am I Insane?
Yeah, they look alright but some of their stuff is just too much for me. I like the hood but after seeing that even the functional one leaves some air flow to be desired, I opted to get a RK Sport Cali Dream. Good luck with your custom paint, and just remember that any colors you pick that are pastel looking will fade over time and require a repaint or youll end up looking like one of those 70's caddys lol

I am about to pull the trigger on a 2007 Mustang GT. I would like to have it professionally painted in a custom color. Am I insane? Are there any special considerations I need to think about? Thanks to all for input, has anyone on this forum done this yet?

Classic cars are fast becoming just that.....a thing of the past. Cars made 20 years ago and up will sell for whatever a buyer wants to pay for it. In other words.....value will be in the eye of the beholder. If you're hoping your S197 miraculously attains classic status in 20-40 years, I feel sorry for you. Limited edition or special production S197's........maybe. Ordinary GT's and V6's?..........forget it.
Fairlane292, I haven't talked to DCF, their website just shows you can get your new Mustang painted in any color (more or less) for $11,000, pictures indicate a full body paint but no details of course. I only mention the DCF site because I figured it was about the cost to have the paint job done, maybe too cheap??
Thisblood147, the two blue static blobs should be a green and blue static blob, actually blue and green metalic colors from the www.autocolorlibrary.com website, check it out. They were just shown for general interest about potential colors.

I can see maybe if you were doing some really elaborate graphic schemes and such........but 11K? I'd find another shop quick if someone told me it was gonna cost that much. DCF is just trying to keep their product really exclusive by jacking up prices to those levels. I promise you a reputable shop won't gut your wallet that bad for a paint job.
Dude, are you nuts? It won't cost you 11K to repaint your car.....unless the paint is THAT outrageously priced. I got quoted 3K to repaint my car any color I want and reclear it with a show-quality finish. And this is from a professional custom shop that does show car jobs on a weekly basis.
There is well over 1000 dollars in matirials alone here.
Basicly, to do this right, the ENTIRE car has to be dissasembled. Fenders, hood, trunk, doors, rockers, bumpers, all the trim, lamps, all the glass except the doors, engine, certain interior pieces such as sill plates and door panels, all weatherstripping, hinges, etc etc etc. Then theres the prep involved to sand, prime and paint each panel of course, plus hours of wetsanding and buffing if you want a show finish.
There is a ton of labor involved there to do a complete, proper color change. Buying a black car and going from there would be a very smart move, that way you can leave certain areas alone, and anywhere where there is factory overspray will look like black primer.
Finding the right shop would be critical. I would say you want a restoration shop, not a body shop. Taking a car apart to that extent requires skill to get it back together and make it look good with proper panel gaps and no rattles. Also, you dont want them to damage what you have.
Yeah $11k is a steal. This is why I said $15k in my initial response (and that's probably way low). The entire engine compartment needs to be pulled of all components (yeah motor and all, nothing left behind). And all this and what classj has referred to has to be put back. You are disassembling/then-reassembling a significant percentage of the car. That's the mechanical piece; ....then you have the prep and paint (oh try to put everything back without scratching the new finish somewhere. This whole thing is so silly, I can't believe we are still talking about it.
In all fairness to TB147, I don't think he realized what was being suggested here. Either that or he's having a hell of a party at his house. (lol)

15K doesent sound too far off base. But then again I have seen musclecar restos where guys disasemble do the rough body work themselves, then hand it over to the body shop. 20K dollars later, you get a painted shell and panels back. But we are talking really high end shops here with big names behind them.
I have seen it done before on a custom M5 V8 BMW Z4.
But it is not even a question of money. I would be more concerned about having my car disasembled to that degree and be put back together. I mean it is a brand new car. I dont even want to take certain things apart as they are factory fresh.
I would say that unless you yourself have the ability to disasemble the car, flatbed it to the body shop for paint, and get it back and reassemble it yourself, dont bother. Production bodyshops are usually not detail oriented, and custom shops will charge you an arm and a leg and may or may not do better work than the production shop.
