How much does it take to beat an LS1?

How much does it take to beat an LS1?
Quick question for you stang guys. I have a 2000 Camaro Z28 but run into a lot of mustang people. I haven't raced the new stangs yet and wanna have an idea what to look out for. How much money and modifications would it take to beat a stock 00 Z28 (298 RWHP, 335 RWTQ)? Anything to look out for?
I have a few mods which is gonna make it a little more confusing to figure it out for me. So far I have K&N's intake, Hooker cat-back, throttle body coolant bypass, Jasper's high performance 4L60E A4 trans, and soon I'm gonna port my throttle body (after I get a catch can so oil stops slicking the TB).

A lot of luck.
Stock for stock the Mustang will take you.
Exhaust does very little for Mustangs.
I suspect you exhaust work better for you.
Your CAI vs a Mustang CAI+re-program, from C+L, JLT, or some others, will get a bunch more HP for the Mustang than it will for you.
So A Mustang with stock exhaust, and a CAI/tune will take you.
IIRC you car has 3.23 rear gears............................................. .......

I've got 3.23 gears on my A4...
the new stangs are faster than the LS1???? I thought they were like 250 RWHP?
I would assume exhausts wouldn't do much for stangs because they're true-dual, but an intake would do more for the GT than a Z28???
What I hate about the Z28 designs was that they made it so restrictive on the intake and exhaust. How I see stangs is that because they have freer flowing parts (ex: true-dual exhaust), they are able to keep up very close to a motor 1.1 bigger than it.
Don't get me wrong over here though, if there wasn't such a thing of a Camaro I'd own a Mustang. I just wanted something a little differrent and even as a toddler I remember staring at cars that said "IROC-Z" and loved how it sounded and looked.

Stock for stock...with equal drivers, the LS1 still beats an S197 Mustang GT. But a CAI and retune on the GT closes the gap significantly.......enough to make it a driver's race. Put gears (3.73's or 4.10's) on the GT and I'll tend to give the GT the edge....from a dig anyways. This is assuming the LS1 is staying stock. All in all, it takes about roughly a bit more than a grand to make the new GT's on par with a stock LS1 F-body (with equal drivers). But with average to below average drivers.........either car could come out on top in stock form on any given race.

i raced my 05 gt when it was stock - Auto
vs a 1995 ls1 Z28 stock- auto
it was close but i won

I would be vary surprised if there are any if at all stock LS1 running around...Most atleast have some type of Catback and or headers. Let alone if they do a cam-swap watch out. Heck just a cam-swap in those cars is atleast 40rwhp increase(in most cases) in the extreme cases 75rwhp.
I think a better comparison is bolt-on GT vs. bolt-on LS1fbody(you know racing stock for stock is goin to be hard to find)
OR
bolt-on GT vs. bolt-on LT1fbody.....LT1 cars are a different story, while they share close to the same displacement(LT1350ci) as the cousin LS1(346ci) they dont have the Heads the Ls1s does. But they are pretty formidable bolt on wise......Just my $.02

These guys say a M-GT should be .1 faster to 60 or in the 1/4 than a Z-Car..................
Just like the M-GT is faster than a 350 hp GTO but slower than the 400 hp GTO.
It's not just the pwer you make, but putting that power on the ground.
The M-GT is good at using it's power.

agreed. if you look at the nuts and bolts of those 0-60 times though what you find is that the MGT gets the hole-shot w/ maybe a 1 car lead, then the LS1 closes the gap. a well-launched ls1 (even stock) is a loooow 13 runner
to answer the original posters question, with your mods i'd say you'd be a worthy opponent for an intake, gears, exhaust (LT's) s197.
