RE: S197 Boss a reality per Motor Trend
Here is another article that says Ford is going to strip out the sound deadening to lighten the beast:

Strip out sound deadening, strip out the rear seat, no AC...
I think they'll just shoe a bored out 4.6, or the 5.4 N/A into a gt along with the GT500 suspension and be done with it. You want it to be comfortable, if you want it track ready you want a roll bar anyway. You can go and strip the sound deadening, actually the entire interior and AC then as well.

RE: S197 Boss a reality per Motor Trend
I believe the news story in the Sept-06 Motor Trend was just plain bad reporting for sensational value rather than informative news reporting.
First of all, that picture was PhotoShopped by Motor Trend. It's so obvious, with all of the jaggies in the "Boss 302" logo, that Motor Trend fabricated that image. There is no such car in existence yet.
Secondly, there is no such thing as a Ford "alloy" 5.0 engine. Unless they are talking about the 5.0 cammer, which is a $15k engine, and that is a crate not a production engine. So that second point of the story is totally bogus. If Ford was going to build this car, then it would use either the aluminum 4.6 with the 500C 4V heads (which you can buy out of the FRPP catalog for ~1500) which are worth an extra 60 hp (and with cold air and a tune would get it up to 370-390 hp as reported) or the iron 5.4. Since the GT500 price point is so low relative to the GT, there is no room for a Boss that has a 5.4.
Thirdly, the suspension on the GT500 was necessary only because it is as heavy as a truck. A lightweight racer like this proposed Boss would be built to showcase Ford's part catalog, like the 500C, meaning it would utilize off-the-shelf suspension parts from the GT.
Overall, the article was TOTALLY BOGUS, and I am sure Motor Trend is embarassed that they printed a story about the Parnelli Jones special edition Saleen BOSS before they realized it was not an official Ford production. It angered me a little when I read it, because it was so obviously fabricated out of thin air. I believe they get away with it by using words like "reportedly" in the article.
I believe Ford is dedicated to just the 4.0, 4.6, and 5.4 for the Mustang. There is no room in Mustang's production for any other engine (any time soon), because just shoehorning the GT500 into the production stream was difficult. The Saleen stroked 4.6 (up to 4.9, technically, but they called it a "5.0") is the only engine remotely similar to what Motor Trend reported. Besides, it would make absolutely no sense to build a new 5.0 when the 4.6 equipped with 500C heads will produce the same numbers.

How hard is this 500c head swap?
How hard is this 500c head swap?
:-) I haven't done it yet, but I have been researching all of the possibilities of upgrading my 06 GT without going to a supercharger, due to cost. For about 1/2 to 2/3 of the price of a bolt-on supercharger, I'd rather go naturally aspirated. There are some awesome heads available right out of the FRPP parts catalog! Check these out:
CNC PORTED 3-VALVE RH CYLINDER HEAD ASSEMBLY
Only slightly more expensive, the Ford GT heads are the ones used on the prototype FR500C. Interestingly, this is an upgraded version of the 2000 Cobra R head, which is also used on Ford Australia's FPV GT-P. $1500 each only seems expensive when you look at the cost of a S/C, IMO!
FORD GT CYLINDER HEAD ASSEMBLY
Here are the production FR500C heads, sourced from the 2004 Cobra. Reportedly worth +60HP with FRPP cams and headers. These are the most affordable of the three. Performance wise, I don't know how they compare.
FORD RACING HIGH FLOW 4.6L DOHC 4V MUSTANG COBRA CYLINDER HEADS
I suspect some of these heads might require a different intake. I'm not sure, but a quick call to FRPP would sort it out.

RE: S197 Boss a reality per Motor Trend
The Boss makes sense for Ford because it will fit nicely between the GT and GT500 just like the Mach1 did after they added the sc to the Cobra. Ford has been saying that they would make a Boss as the final part of the mustang heritage series that gave us the Bullitt, Mach1, and GTCS. The 5.0 cammer crate motor is a 4.6 (I forgot what they did to get it up to 5.0l) and just because it’s currently a crate motor doesn't mean that Ford couldn't produce enough of them for a vehicle that has about the same production #'s as the Bullitt or Mach.
