Options:
1. bad gas - Keep track of where you go to get gas - there are various threads on which companies seem to have better standards
2. overheating - mustang water temp gauge is, er, uh, how to put this politely - CRAP!
3. Running Lean for whatever reason (bad tune - see below)
4. bad tune/bad PCM - but you said you are bone stock, it is "possible" that your computer could be faulty and get the timing wrong, but I would suspect #1 and #2 LONG before I would even consider that...
A "ping" (or detonation) happens when the gas explodes before the spark sets it off...
So, for our purposes what that means is that the combustion happens at the wrong time and now the engine is subject to lots of force at the wrong time and bad things follow...
Your engine has a "detonation detector", so ideally it is supposed to notice that this happens and throw a Check Engine Light...
I would assume the threshold for that is 1 detonation, but I don't know for sure...
More importantly - pinging is a bad thing for Aluminum engines, particularly under load (acceleration) - if you suspect this is what is happening, I would not be afraid to bug the dealer about it...

Yes exactly what it sounded like! What would cause that?

Awesome explanation cekim. It's people like you that make it a pleasure to learn things on this forum. Thanks!

RE: Motor noise question. Just a ford thing?
Had the fuel pump replaced yet? Classic conditions of a hot, leaned out engine. After a couple hours driving, the gas gets pretty warm in the tank, coupled with partially vapored locked fuel pump - bingo - not enough gas is going to the motor, and thus allot of noise.

LOL. She drives a ford and shes had nothing but problems with it so I can understand the frustrations. I'm a chevy guy, and this is probably the only ford I will ever buy.
