With the success Ford is having with this model why the hell not up the horsepower a bit and charge mid 30's for base price, it will sell. The challenger if its built like the prototype will be a big hit, the camaro however looks like a poor mans attempt of a Caddilac sts or whatever that ugly crap model is, with the exception of the Corvette GM is still producing the worlds ugliest car and truck line.
All this talk about how Challengers and Camaros are going to stomp all over the Mustang is VERY premature. It's easy to throw out a bunch of big HP numbers when you don't have sh** in production to back it up. Yeah, the Camaro will weigh 3300 pounds and come stock with a 400 hp V6 and have an optional 500 hp V8. Oh, it will also come standard with a 7 speed tranny, will run on recycled vegetable oil, turn 10 seconds in the quarter mile and will MSRP for 15,000.00! See, you've now read it on the internet so it's got to be true!!!
The Mustang is at a distinct disadvantage in these bench racing wars because the Mustang is REAL. It EXISTS. Its numbers cannot be inflated, there's too much hard data out there. So it's easy to say "yeah, the stang -only- has 300 hp, so the Camaro will kill it because it's got a bazillion more HP". Don't believe it people. By the time the Camaro and/ or Challenger hit production, reality will set in. The weight WILL be heavier than what they're touting. The HP numbers will no doubt be less. Even if they have souped up versions, there will probably be base models with very modest HP. In particular the Challenger has a very tough road to travel. It's going to be built on the Chrysler 300 chassis. Has anyone compared the performance numbers of the Charger SRT8 to the GT lately? It -barely- ekes ahead of the GT in the 1/4 (stock for stock) despite having a LOT more horsepower. Lesser equipped Chargers, even Daytonas, regularly get shown the taillights of GTs. The Challenger will be no different, it'll have two doors but it's going to be a heavy boat of a car like the Charger. Plus Ford ain't out of the game yet. By the time these new offerings come out, you can fully expect Ford to have a new surprise tucked under the Mustang hood too. It's nice to see the old musclecar wars heating back up again
