The Shaker 1000 is the "best" radio I have ever had in a car. But I only have it because I bought my car off the lot.
For the money you can do a lot better with aftermarket head units and speakers, but I won't change anything out until there is a problem with it....
So in a nutshell if you care about audio quality then spend the money on aftermarket, but if you are buying off the lot the 500 / 1000 should be good enough for most people.
