Default WTF is up with my e-brake?

So ive put over 8000 miles on my 2006 GT, and just today when I got in it I knew something is up with my handbrake. It seems very loose, even though it still works. It just feels like something has worked itself loose.

Also, is it bad to pull up the handbrake slowly when pulling to a stop? I almost never do this but I did it a few days ago, and thought that might be related with this problem.

Under the arm rest, toward the driver there is a little access panel. Pull it from the top to remove it. I have not looked in with a light but, I assume it's there for a reason!
