Gonna race an 05 GTO... need help...
My friend has an 05 GTO 6-speed. I've got an 06 GT 5-speed.
He's giving me time to break my car in, I bought it with 200, I'm up to 600 now.
Say around 2k miles we are taking them to a local drag strip where you can pay to drag.
Both are stock.
How can I beat his car? From all that I've read our 0-60 times are real close. Don't know about after that, is he gonna pull ahead in the quarter mile? Will probably come down to technique. What would yours be?
TCS off? What would you rev it to before letting out the clutch? Pop the clutch or something slower? Run it to redline in each gear or shift at another point? Any advice (do this, don't do this) will help...
Honestly, the first time I drove his car he said I drove it better than him, so if it comes down to technique I think I've got a good chance...
Just have never dragged before on an actual track with lights and all... got to beat this guy!

What engine is in the GTO? I raced a 6.0l with at least an exhaust just messing around on a vacant road and we were neck and neck the whole way. All I had at the time was a CAI and tune.

That GTO has a 400 hp LS2 with 400 pounds of torque. It only weighs about 200 pounds more than your GT. I've never driven an LS2, but I own a Caddy CTSV with the 400/400 LS6. The caddy is supposedly a dead heat with a GTO.
The caddy is LOADS more powerful than my GT. I love my GT and usually prefer to drive it over the caddy, but sorry, a 25% advantage in hp and torque shows itself. The problem though with the GTO and the caddy is the launch. The IRS hops all over the place. If he manages a good launch he will kick your a$$ unless he really sucks as a driver. If he blows the launch and you don't, and you scream it to redline and shift like a machine, and his engine blows up, maybe you will stay ahead of him.
Good luck and let us know the result.

I just traded my '05 GTO for my '06 GT. The GTO is faster, no doubt about it. However, you should be able to hang with him until around 60 mph, and then he's going to walk by you and put a few car lengths on you.
I'm still learning with the Mustang, but by all rights, you should need another 40-50 RWHP to match or beat him. I would say a CAI, good 91 tune, and gears and you should be able to give him a really good run. Maybe LT's for insurance. This will be my set up as stage 1 in my build up.
Good luck, and remember, be a gracious loser.

With some drag radials you have a chance....the GTO has worse tires than we do from the factory. The GTO is faster in every respect......so unless he is a ****ty driver you will lose. If you run drag radials and he stays with the stock rubber then your traction advantage should overcome the power disadvantage.
