Well, my last post on this thread was December I believe. We had the work done in December where Ford had the car 3 weeks trying to figure out/fix the rearend whine/hum. After 3 weeks of frustration, we finally picked the car up and brought it home. NOT FIXED I might add. Just wore out, tired of dealing with Ford. The car has the 45 mph whine and a slight hum.
Skip forward to April and I'm on vacation now. I took the car back, since my batteries are charged again, to deal with Ford on this continuing problem. I dropped the car off on Thursday and Friday I got the call from my Service writer. He said they changed the gears (this is now the 4th set including the original gears) and it still makes the whine and slight hum.He said they called Detroit and they are sending a new rear (hub to hub) and replace the whole thing!!!!!!!!!
I will let you know the outcome.
In my BS session with him on the phone, he said they just did this with a customers car who had just put in Ford Motor Sports gears and itwhined/hummed also. He also got a new rear hub tohub.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope the new rear does it for you.
I've finally gotten to the point that I'm happy with my car again. It's been a LONG and frustrating struggle. I haveVERY slight gear flutter (too slight to call it a whine) on decel 65-45 mph, so slight thatI don't reallyhear it anymore, and most others wouldn't even notice it. The vibration that appeared after one of the gear fixes is finally gone after 3 different driveshaft replacements. The hum turned out to be mostly tire noise from uneven tire wear, which was caused apparently by a defective drivers side rear axle. They put microphones near each wheel somehow to figure that out. Replaced the axle, and boom - the woob woob sound was greatly reduced (although not eliminated). Up until that point, I was ready to start dynamatting to try and reduce the noises. Don't have to now.
If there's one thing I've learned from all this, it's that almost all GT's have some degree of rear end noise or vibration. Every carI drove at the dealer (3 of them) had varying degrees of gear whine, hum, vibration, and even the woob woob sound, which really surprised me. So I'm just happy now that my car is more quiet than every brand new GT I've driven. I am finally driving now and enjoying it, not listening for every little sound.
I really hope yours get fixed soon.Be glad they're willing to replace the whole thing. The way things are for Ford now, consider yourself lucky. They could've given the old "normal for this vehicle". Considering my experience with the other new cars, they wouldn't necessarily be wrong. Good luck and keep us posted.

Okay,
We got the car back. Here is what they did.
They installed new gears again. Didn't work. We were told a new rear hub to hub was now ordered. What they actually did was install a new Housing. BTW, I had been told by an independent owner of a drive line business months ago that it could be the housing that is out of tolerance. So far the problem is gone!!!! No whine/moan. However, we will give it some time before we celebrate. This problem did not start for us in the first place until around the 3000 mile mark. After a few more miles, we will see.
Hope the info helps.

combination of things. Slicks, supercharger, 5700 rpm launch = broken axle
warrenty looked after that one
the posi went byebye about two weeks later they think that they didnt ge all the filings and metal flakes out of the diff when they swapped the axle.
axle failure was traced to an air bubble in the metal when it was cast, along with hitting it, REALLY HARD

Hi all
Being a lincoln mercury tech i find this thred disturbing. Idon't work on mustangs but i do rebuild rears on all the 8.8 lincoln mercurys. They all have the same whine that mustangs have with the exception that every 1 we rebuild works out fine. I'm thinking the problem is with the gear sets you might be using. We only use ford oem gears which requires a special pinion depth tool for only ford oem gears. Now granted a mercury grand marquis customer isn't going to request 3.73s or 4.10 so the motive frpp gear issue doesn't come into play with us. I'm willing to bet that the ford techs installing these gears are using the ford tool on motive gears which probably is causing the wrong pinion depth.
