RE: Let's defend the Shelby GT500!
To me, personally, on a road course. Weight and distribution, ballance and agility are much more important than HP.
On the track, I would rather have a 3000-3400 lb, 300-360hp car with near 50/50 distribution over a 500hp, 4000lb car, with close to 60/40 distribution any day of the week.
The porsche cayman is proof positive of this. I still say, take a GT with factory 18" wheels. Throw on nice tires and brembos. Intake and tune. Maybe a stiffer rear sway bar if needed. Adjustable shocks may be nice but not always needed.
I think that would be one hell of a fun combo at a road course (thats my initial plan that is in progress anyway) and might just be faster than a GT500 as far as track times are concerned or darn close.
The fact that the GT500 is only a tic quicker than a 350Z (a car that frankly seems boring and slow to me), sums it up for me.

I meant as a handling package we could order on our Mustangs(much like Chevy offers the Z51 package on the 'Vette) from the factory....a lot of us guys in our 40's would prefer to check it off on a box when ordering our cars instead of hunting down parts through a catalog, hauling it home and making an appointment to have it all installed. I installed parts like during the past 20 years on more than a handful of cars...it's still fun, but when I've already plucked down $30K on a car, it would be nice to have a high(er)
performance suspension option for a performance car.......

Agreed.
I mentioned elsewhere that the following package should be availible.
-18" wheels with summer tires
-Brembo Brakes
-Stiffer suspension and sway bars
-Bilstein or koni shocks
-1/2" to 3/4" lower ride height.
-Adjustable front camber
-More performance oriented steering feel.
-Maybe a brace or two here or there. (g-trac, stut tower, etc)

Ford has track package, it's called a C6 or a used C5.. I love my Stang, my family has had 11 of them, but it's not a vette, never will be a vette. The problem is since the z28 and Forumla got canned because of the Stang, Ford and Stang owners reach and try to compare thier cars to the next American push rod V8, the vette. There has never been a non dissapointing Cobra because the Cobra is at the same level as a vette and it simply can't be. Every base line vette beats the cobra as an all around car. When the Camaro comes back out, we can all go back to comparing our stangs to them until then, relax, our cars are still great. And for the idiots who buy Roush or Saleen $51,000 Mustangs, get a clue, buy a vette if you want that much performance and save a few dollars and get a all around better car.

True. But there is nothing wrong with ford making a nice package for the stang for a few thousand that makes it a little nicer.
As far as the C6, it is nice, fast, and handles great. But driving the C6 and the mustang back to back, with the ability to buy either I chose the mustang. I felt it was more fun normally, looked great, sounded good, was a little more practical and cheaper. The car I really loved was the cayman. That thing was tugging at my heartstrings. But I know porsche is going to throw more power at it, and I couldent justify 60-65K dollars for a daily driver just yet. And if I had wanted to spend 65K, just knowing the ZO6 exists makes for difficult decisions.
Maybe one day I will succomb to the vette bug. But for a daily driver, the stang is pretty darn good.
As far as the GT500. Just as I told the salesperson at the dealer when I saw one. The mustang GT is a pretty amazing 29-30K dollar car. To buy the GT500 at list instead of a vette, someone would have to love mustangs. At 60-70k, all I can say is that it would never be me. I would take a ZO6 or a porsche cayman over it every time.
All I do know is that I parked the stang for a couple weeks to do a little more driving on my summer only cars before they get put away till spring. Got back in the stang today and it put a smile on my face and felt even more impressive than I had remembered.
