Default RE: Oil

Too many years ago I knew a mechanic that had many years of experience. IF synthetic oil was even around at time, I didn't notice it much. This was middle seventies....

Anyway, this fellow did not beleive in multweight oil. He told me one day, on oil, "I use 10 weight on a new engine, when is starts using I go 20 weight, then upwards till 50 weight, then I rebuild the engine" or replace engine or car.

I suggest you ONLY use 5 W 20 because of our VT (variable valve timing). THis engine is NOT like anything before it. You cannot think old school with it. THis engine has to have a STOCK factory oil pump too. NOT and aftermarket High Volume. It took a while for all the pro's to learn this one too.

You can get the motorcraft blend at wallmart for $220 a ouart and they also sell the 820s filter for $395.

Right on. I just change it with what Ford gave it at birth.....Ford Syn Blend. Every 3000 miles.

Was just over on another Mustang forum, there saying synthetic oil is bad for our engines, that the blend should be used, something to do with the varible timing. Anybody heard of this ? If this is true which I don't really think it is, there's going to be alot of bad engines because it seems the majority of us are using a full synthetic.
synthetic...always.

Define a "synthetic oil." You might find many definitions here in the US as there is NO standard to which an oil is labelled a synthetic. Your Owner's Manual states, for GTs, use 5W20 and change the oil/filter at 5000 miles. Based on this change interval, ANY 5W20 that meets the Ford specs will give good results.

If you want to change to "synthetic," be informed as to what that means.

Yesterday I picked up my 07 Gt after having the clutch packs replaced on that TSB. I asked this very question to the shop forman, and my service rep. I was told point blank to use 5w-20 that came in the car but it did not have to be Motorcraft. Wide bearings and close tolerances require this. I have been running Castrol 20 w -50 in everything I have owned down to my lawnmower but as one person said in a previous post you cant think old school here. He is right.

I also asked what would be the very best oil to run in the 5 speed manual trans, and would yearly changes be enough. Once again, they told me that the oil used in the trans from Ford is as good or better than anything else, and the intervals are at 30.000 miles. I still plan on changing it yearly at around 15.000 miles. I believe he said the trans fluid was Mercon 4. Naturally, you would expect these guys to tell you the stuff from Ford is the best, but Al my service rep, is a local racer here too and has allways been straight up with me.

He said though that synthetics like Mobil 1 are great, but cost way too much, and since nobody we know has ever ran past 3.000 miles on an oil change, the synthetic blend is perfect. Sure you can run way past that on mobil 1, but why would you want to?

Just another oppinion from another proud Mustang Gt owner, and his Ford dealer.

I have been running red-line in all my performance cars and my customers cars for about a decade now. Great stuff.

Main thing to keep in mind is to use the grade they reccomend. As their oils dont thin out and their 10w40 for example, has the viscosity of a 20w50 standard oil at operating temperatures.

As far as mobil 1 and royal purple and amsoil. I really am not into heavily advertised and factory supported brands. I will occasionally use mobil 1 in the porsches as that is the reccomended oil. But I honestly think red-line has a better product. I have had seal leakage problems when using mobil one. Rope seals in older motors especially dont like it.

Royal purple seems too joke like of an oil to me. Too much marketing and not enough science. Red-line has about an hour of solid reading material and data. If you slosh through it and read it, it is really good stuff.

And as far as
