I will definitely do this. A couple questions though... you mention CLEANER WAX. What is the difference? Meguiars makes about a dozen different waxes so I want to be sure I do this right this time. I have read good things about the NXT liquid wax. What will the regular Meguiars Cleaner Wax do that NXT can't? I will be going to Advance Auto tomorrow... thank you!
I too would like to know the difference between cleaner wax and regular "polshing wax" or whatever you call it. I read that autogeek site and it didnt mention cleaner wax just carnuba.. Im really confused as to what to do now. Tomorrow will be my HUGE cleaning day, since Im finally finished with exterior mods for awhile I decided I would strip down, clay and wax the car, what do I need to use to accomplish this?

When we bought my car we bought the extra zylon or w/e paint protection thing that they do to it (they put the stuff on the space shuttle, we assumed it was pretty damn good b/c of that) so does that matter when I try to strip it and rewax? Will it strip that coating off? Thanks
A cleaner/wax is exactly what it says it is. It is a mild paint cleaner combined with wax. A polish is a product that actually helps to bring out the depth and shine of the paint while adding nutrients to it. If you do not want to spend a lot of time detailing and getting the best results possible then you would want to simply clay then apply the Cleaner/Wax. It is an ok product as it helps clean and also applies wax but it will not bring out the shine any more. Polish really allows you to get that deep shiny paint then after polsih you apply either wax or a sealant. The dealership selants will not last forever and honestly are a huge ripoff and easy money for the dealers. It will come off with claybar. I actually use a Sealant and a wax on my vehicles.

What steps you take really do depend on the condition of the paint. My vehicle rarely need deep cleaning and polishing as i keep them in tip top shape most of the time. and I oly need to clay maybe twice a year and polsih once a year. What you need to remeber is polishing does remove clear coat that is how it make the paint look good. You are removing the imperfections.

And yes White Vinegar is ok to use but it does remove wqax as well so if you use it you must then reapply wax. Use a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and distilled water.

Richard
I read that using a paint sealant (synthetic wax right?) and then a real carnuba wax is actually the best thing you can do right? So if I have it right, you wash it, clay it, paint cleaner, paint polish, then synthetic wax (paint sealant), then carnuba correct?

Yep that is what i do. I actually happen to use a Sealant that is Carnauba based as it tends to be more compatible with the Carnauba wax.

What sealant do you use? I just bought the Meguiars 3 step deep crystal, cleaner-polish-carnuba because it looked really good, but couldnt find a paint sealant that looked half way decent. I was thinking about the Eagle nanowax as a sealant but decided Id wait and see what you thought.

The Meg's 3 Step Deep Crystal System is actually a very good OTC (Over The Counter) product and i used it for years. I now by most of my detail supplies online and have been really happy with the Poorboys lineup. Very easy to use and gives great results. I have heard that the Nanowax is ok but have no experiance with it.

Here is the Sealant i use.

Thanks alot Richard, Im going to order some of that sealant and hopefully it will be here by next weekend. I have a few more questions though lol sorry. I just washed the car good and tried to clay it and it seems to be doing alright but there are some small black spots left on the paint (which is bad, my car is silver). Now granted you have to be like 8 inches away to see them but they are there and not coming off, thats what worries me. I have no idea what they are.... and Im not sure whether I am using too much lubricant or not enough. Is it better to drown the spot in lube or just a tiny spritz? Also should I be applying alot of pressure or should it come off just by gliding the clay across it? Im having the urge to just scrub the hell out of it with the clay... but that would probably damage something lol.

You need to keep the surface wet if you don't the clay will stick better to have to much than not enough. As for the amount of pressure you really only want the weight of your hand on the clay when going back and forth. As for your black spots really hard to say what it is or even how to get it off without knowing what it is or what it looks like. A paint cleaner may work after the clay.

Check this out... I knew it was going to rain all day yesterday and into the night, so I left the car out of the garage on purpose to get rained on, thinking the rain might help wash away all those hard water stains. Well.... it did !!

The car was in the constant rain for probably 8-10 hours and I checked this morning and most of those grotesque water spots that I posted before are all gonzo. Hard scrubbing with Meguiars Quik Shine and a microfiber towel didn't work, but a constant drip from heaven sure did. Well at least I feel better now that my car isn't ruined forever. I'm still going to clay and re-wax this week.

Also, I was pleasantly surprised that after that long in the rain, the new product I used for tire shine stayed on. I'm quite impressed.... I used that new Armorall Extreme Shine Gel that comes in the orange packaging. Very nice product available at Advance. Highly recommend.

Thanks again guys...

OK, a few corrections re: the drivel below. Not everyone has eons of time to detail their car every week. If you do, congrats to you. When we do have the time to detail our cars, I assure you that lazy ol' us can get a finish that is as good as the factory paint can ever get. However, those of us that don't have unlimited amounts of time to towel and detail their car (ya know, some of us have jobs and kids and responsibilities), the Mr. Clean kit is a great way to cut down the time needed to make a car look nice, if not perfect. So..ya gotta buy their soap and filters.....what's your point?

So, I know that you "do not want to hear about it" as you intentionally went out of your way to offend us "lazy" people, but when you make moronic comments that attack other people's helpful suggestions, you are gonna hear about it.

Ok I am going to say a few things and i do not not want to hear about it as I am going to offend a few on here. First off the Mr. Clean Wash system is for lazy people that do not want to take the time that is needed to maintain a car and keep it looking it's best. Also you must buy their soap and there filters or it will not work. Again i suggest getting the filter system i posted on page one. You guys spend thousands of dollars on mods and to me detail supplies are simply another mod and you must spend some good money to get the proper cleaning tolls. As for drying Chamois is old school and the new and much better method of drying is a Waffle Weave Microfiber towel. There are no shortcuts to a good looking car it takes hard work and dedication. Next and this is to Larmo i keep seeing you say your using Dial Soap and I am assuming you mean like the dish soap or hand soap. This is one of your major problems along with your water. DO NOT EVER EVER use any soap other than a car specific soap on your car. Household soaps are the worst thing you can do to your paint. At this point you have messed the paint up pretty good but nothing that cannot be fixed with some hard work. My honest suggestion to you is to locate a good detailer and pay him to get your car back in tip top shape and then spend the time and money learning the proper techniques to maintain it from that point on. Again go read up on the site i listed it is a great teaching source.

Not so lucky here - close enough to the coast to get some serious muck in our rain-water depending on the origin of the storm...

Clay-bar worked wonders to get the spots accumulated at the dealer/shipping before I got the car...

Since then, I spray the lower 1/4 of the car with a hose if it gets really dirty and "dry wash" the rest with one very wet and one dry micro-fiber cloth...

Got my week-end routine down to 45 minutes...

You beat me to it 6XStang, yeah I was gonna comment on why someone would critic other's suggestions that have worked for them without ill affects. In my initial post on this thread I was stating that in areas where hard water(i.e. heavy calcium concentrated tap water), it would be good to get a water conditioner, the Mr. Clean kit is the least expensive over the counter product that can combat hard water. Just the ability to rinse with "clean" water is enough reason to purchase it, and yes, I would suggest a hand wash with a
dedicated car-wash soap and just use the Mr. Clean system to rinse the car down......I realize everyone has their own "methods" that work well for them....bottom line is to keep the car as contaminant free as possible and used products that don't do damage to the surface. If your car is a daily driver, then more attention will be necessary to maintain that nice "factory" finish, and products like Mr. Clean(if used properly) can aid in obtaining that IMO
