Default Need Help about Dyno tuning

Hey guys,

My mods are in my sig. I am very happy with Freds tunes from Evo but this weekend I am going to put the car on the dyno and see what my numbers really are instead of guestimating from what other people are getting.

The place I am going is Slingshotmotorsport in IL and the owner asked if I want him to dyno tune the car if I or he thinks there is more power to be found, however I will loose all of Freds tunes from the handheld.

I don't think my current tune from Fred is far from ideal, I am thinking the A/F will be spot on and I am sure the numbers will be fine.

My question is will a dyno tune yeild the best numbers or is it subject to the tuner?

I really need help here guys, I don't know how to judge if I need to have the car dyno tuned and what questions to ask. I have the option of paying for the dyno runs but if after the results are in I want him to tune it he will only charge me for the tuning and not the run so I will be saving 75 bucks.

What scares me is seeing good numbers, him telling me he can do better, having him erase Freds stuff, having the new tune suck and having to pay him for his time and then go back to Fred and rebuy his tunes.

What should I do?

Thanks

I have talked to several dyno tuners, and the general consenus is that you only benefit from a Dyno tune if you have unusual mods or an unusual combination of mods.

The only mod that you have that would have anything to do with your tune is your JLT intake. That is bread and butter for a shop like Evo. They probably dyno dozens of cars a week with that mod. Their mail-order tune is going to be very good. I doubt you will see any gain at all on the dyno, perhaps if you did a few pulls and fooled around a bit you might see 1 or 2 HP, but that's less than the natural error of the dyno. You could make a few pulls with no changes and you'd probably see an extra couple of HP between your first run and one of your later ones.

In my opinion I wouldn't worry about the dyno tune unless you get a LOT more mods.

Mail order tunes are usually a tad on the rich side always just for safety. I got around 11 over brents.

Dyno-tuning is strongly recommended for forced induction modifications to ensure proper air/fuel ratios to avoid things like detonation.

Thanks for all the replies,

Seeing how my power mods are only the CAI, it seems like my main concern is my A/F ratio, right????

If, with Freds tune, it is around 12.6 to 12.8, do you guys think that the cost of a dyno tune is worth a few more hp? What would be your cutoffs? If the A/F was 11.0 and it was making 265whp then would you dyno tune it? If the A/F was 12.0 and it was making 275whp, would you dyno tune it to a lean it out and make more horsepower? Or would you say that 5whp isn't worth 250 bucks.

I'm figuring since it is a dynojet dyno and with my few mods (JLT II CAI, 4.10s, and a 93 octane tune from Fred at Evo) I should be seeing around 285-295whp, remember it is cold up here in chicago (~40 F). I know my 4.10s are going to reduce the torque so I figure around 310wtrq.

what do you guys think?

I would at least check the A/F readings. With a good tuner you'll make more HP, but not too much with the mod that you have. The biggest thing for you is to make sure your current tune isn't running lean or too rich. Mail order tunes can always be improved with a local tuner. I once a tune that gave me 328hp and toke the car to get a better tune and my current tuner still made 354hp.

If you decide to get a new tune, flash your programmer back to stock first. DO you have SCT or Diablo? SCT you will be able to use with your new tune. With Diablo you WILL have to have Ford flash the PCM back to stock.

I have the SCT Xcal II handheld tuner and I am bringing it to the dyno shop to refresh the tune before doing the runs to make sure the spanish oak hasn't tinkered with it.

So what gains do you guys think warrants $250 bucks?

Plus when you do dyno tune the car do you only have one tune or do you have many tunes for street, strip, and different octanes?

Thanks guys

$250 isn't bad for a tune. The only thing is you don't really have a lot of mods. As for the tunes, expect to get one tune. Sometimes a tuner will give you one or two more, but I guess it depends on them and what they are for.

Usually it is 2 tunes. A street tune and a race tune, the race tune usually requires race gas because it has more timing in it. The 4.10's if anything will increase your torque not decrease it. $250 for a dyno tune is rather expensive for a n/a tune, 2nd of all you wont really need a dyno tune with your mods, you can just get along with sct's user adjustability and lean it out. Lean it out to around 12.8 or so if it is at the tailpipes, if it is in the mid car sensors then 13.0
