But whats the benefit of going that wide, I mean I know you increase the contact patch but that also makes the car more nervous on the road and noiser... I was planning on using 245/40 all around.

I would definitely agree with torch red on this. You should at least bump up the rears to 275 or larger.
Your other logic on this is your buying 20"s and your concerned about vehicle NVH(noise, vibration, harshness)? Even with a 20" rim a 40 profile tire is kind of tall for such a rim. Most people running 20"s are running 30's or 35's.
Your optimal rim should be a 18-19, not girly and not to getto. Their are more options for tires sizes. Tires sizes are cheaper with the varity. Optimal in my opinion is a 255 or 265.35.19 up front with a 275 or bigger wheel in the rear. I mean last time I checked you purchased a mustang.. not a honda civic.
A key point to look at and my opinion a great example even thou I'm poking fun at myself.
This sema vehicle at 245.35.19's all around. Now due to the sponsoring company i was limited to this tire size other wise i generally run 265 up front and a 295 in the rear.
Now as you can see 245 just don't fit this vehicle. If you tryand add more power to the vehicle your more likely to just end up spinning your tires more often.
Now by closely evulating this second picture we can determine that the larger contact patch of the outlined area DOES mean improved performance.

Wider=better I would think. I have got 265 on mine 18's. I can't imagine 245/40 on 20's. But to each his ownI guess. Physically it would work, but it may look quite different and odd..

How wide are the 20's? I'm guessing atleast 8.5 inches. If I just had to have 20's, I would run a 255/40/20 all around. They are only .7 inches larger in diameter so they'll be .35 inches closer to the wheel well. Well that's not entirely true, i'd probably put a 275/40/20 in the rear or larger if it would fit.
I wouldn't buy 20's for performance reasons, plus the harsher ride, but if I did I would go with a 28 inch overall diameter for piece of mind and hopefully a little more comfort.

For 20" rims i would run 275/35 all around as 275 is the widest tire you can have on a width of 9". Personally, i like the ol' school mixed in with a lil new school, i'm going with 18x9 Chrome DD Bullitts for x-mas with 255/45's all around, i wanted 275's but where to much.
I believe the optimal width in the front would be 255 and the optimal width in the rear i would say is 275-285. Also keep in mind, the more tire you have touching the road the more friction you see. So, you must find that balance.

Ok, this are my options do to the unique way of buying rims and tires where I live, I only have two options
1. 245/40 tires with 8.5 rims (all 4)
2. 275/35 tires with the same rims... only problem would be that if I can fit 275 in the front and that the rims wont look tacky being 8.5 inches wide with 275s...
Help me guys because I am buying these rims tomorrow!
