Underdrive pulley install problems
I installed a seto of Steeda underdrive pulleys last night on my 2006 GT. Everything went pretty smooth until start up when I noticed a strange noise. I discovered the back of the harmonic balancer is making some contact with the engine case. It looks like there's clearance visually but it is making contact somewhere because I could start tiny bits of aluminum floating around. Called Steeda they said to pull out slightly with a puller then retighten the bolt. Has anyone else had similar problmes. I think I will go ahead and pull it completely off to see how bad it was rubbing.
It seemed like it went on straight. It looks like its running true. I was thinking maybe the tolerances on the steeda piece are just tighter, or perhaps the casting on the engine case is just off a little.
I used a crankshaft press to install the crank pulley. It is critical it goes on straight.
Here's a write up on how to do it.

The one thing that got me real bad was the bolt on the alternator. I did not notice that the belt was so close to the bolt and when I started the engine, it ripped the belt to shreds. Unfortunately, the UDP I purchased did not come with any instructions. nothing like learning from your mistakes.

Stone- +1 on getting the original pulley off... that was a pain when I did mine as well. I have the Roush Pulleys and they are great... went on easy and have no problems at all.
Yeah the real trick was taking off the fan housing that made all the difference in the world, I/we almost ripped the old one in half taking it off I could see the seal comming apart while we did it.
Here's an update on what I've discovered. I pulled the Steedapulleys off last night and could see the inside of the pulley was making just a little contact with the timing cover on one side. I measured the depth of the steeda piece and the stock pulley and there is about a 1mm or .040inch difference. On top of that with the steeda pulley being smaller the clearance is tighter because that section of the timing case raises outward towards the pulley. Also the casting on the timing case is not real perfect, which is probably also a contributor. I filed some material of the timing case where it was rubbing, but think I am going to have my Dad who is a machinist use a latheto take alittle bitoff the inside of the steeda pulley. For now I just reinstalled the factory pulleys. Ialso noticedwith the stock pulley back on it doesn't seem torun quite as true as the steeda piece did. I can see just a very veryslight bit of wobble. Does anyone know if this is normal? I never really looked at how true the stock pulley ran before removed. Can someone take a look at theirs and tell me how straight their stock harmonic balancer pulley runs? Thanks
