Default Tire Size

Looking to increase the tire size on my 07 Stang. They seem to be a little on the thin side. I wanted to increasefrom thestock 235/50/18 to 245/45/18. The guys at tire rack tell me the 245/45/18 is not a recommendedfitment and may be under loaded. He recommends an increase to 245/50/18. That tire just seems tall or maybe I'm splitting hairs. Is it possible to get a decent tire size with the stock 18/8.5 rims? rims?

Why not go with a 255/45/18? IIRC (if I recall correctly) the height of a 235/50/18 is 26.3 inches and a 255/45/18 is 26.1 inches. The 255 is still within the recommended rim width size. fd

+1, 255/45 is the way to go. General rule= For every 20mm increase in width you drop the aspect ratio by 5. Likewise, for every 1" increase in wheel diam, you drop the aspect ratio by 5.

Here's my ride with the above mentioned size.

side question

stock width for an 18" wheel is 8.5", so for a 17" it is 8" wide?

Yes, the stock width of our 17 inchers is 8", but that's just on our cars. For example my old MDX wore 17x7's and my RX350 has 18x7's. There is no hard and fast rule regarding WHEEL size and width.

Thanks allot guys...This was a big help. The "bigcustomwheels" site and the correspondence with tire rack was very informative. Looks like I'm going with the 255/45/18s on the advice of my fellow Mustang Junkies!
