Camaro VS. Mustang "Talk"
I was on GM Performance's website and they were discussing the new concept Camaro. Obviously, the new Camaro is being compared to the Mustang and being built to compete with the Mustang.During an interview, they were asking those that were at the unveiling of the concept Camaro questions. Some were of course were bringing up our Mustang. The answer to this question really caught my nerves:
In your opinion, at what price would a base V-8 version be affordable to an average performance enthusiast?
About $25,000 should be the base price. This would put it right there with the Mustang GT which, with its heavy and torque-deficient engine, would be sure to get its doors blown off--just as it had during the reign of the LS1 F-body.
Now I'm sure most of you would agree that chances are Chevy won't be able to price their V8 version of the Camaro at the same rate as the Mustang GT (which is actually $28,000 new). Especially, if they put in one of the 2 motors that they've been discussing:
- 300 HP 5.3 L V8, LH6
- 400 HP V8, LS2
- And for V6 models, 240 HP 3.9L LZ8
I'm thinking around $35,000 for the V8 Camaro if they seriously plan on putting that LS2 in there. That would put it right in the cost category of the new GTO ($33K+) which has the LS2 also pushing 400 HP. They'll probably make the V6 version around $25K if anything. I predict them discontinuing again due to few buyers because of the cost compared to the Mustangs.
Honestly, I think the Camaro Concept is attractive and if were rich I'd buy one too. But you can't beat the Mustangs...there's just something about them. I'm really just anxious for them to release it so we can see what happens.

I really dont see how they could put that kind of engine in a Camaro and price it for less then the mustang. I think its going to be around 35k, if not, defintely above 30k, and end up just being another GTO. Is the base V8 Camaro going to be a LS2? If not it may be possible for them to put a smaller more efficent V8 in, like the one they put in the SS Impalas and price it for 25k... but I dont think it would beat the Mustang w/ the SS Impala engine.
You may be right...
What I'm thinking is that they will put the 300 HP 5.3L V8 in the base version and make an SS with 400HP LS2 for a whole lot more $.

Who cares what they do. If it even remotely looks like the concept car it will be "FUGLY"!!! Don't care how fast it is, it's like the old saying: "no matter how hard you rub, you can't shine a turd".
The problem is the plateform, it has an IRS which is going to cost a lot more, Ford was smart to keep the live rear in our cars to save money, and lots of it. I'm sure it will be the stang, but if they were smart, they would build the car to exactly Stang costs and performance.
Couldnt Agree More..Style wins hands down...Look at theGTO, Great car, gorgeous interior, Coulndnt give it away.. Camaro is plain UGLY. Challenger will be awsome, but will be expensive, 35k Minimun to start, and probably wont have a V6 option, thats the rumor so far....
The Mustang is just better looking... Period.

GTO stands for "Get Thatthing Outahere"!
It's definitely better looking than the current GTO though...
