I have heard some talk of trying fit a muffler in front of the axle, so you have a long pipe out the back as the older Mustang do, but who knows if that will do it and I have spent too much money already to try it myself.
Has anyone tried this? Im thinking this might be my next experiment!!! This new design with the axel-back mufflers IMO, mimics much of the Corvette design. I wonder if Ford envied that idea and decided to adapt to a more sophisticated exhaust note, and also allow for consumers to be able to swap there mufflers easily in the comfort of their own garages... Just a little food for thought... But if anyone's tried to have the 05-UP GT custom fitted with some mufflers running parallel to the driveshaft please let me know!! Im very curious!!

I'm just having a hard time understanding why, after Ford spent so much time and effort on getting the S197 exhaust sounding like a classic Mustang, that you would like the older S95 sound better...

I cant be the first person to tell you that exhaust judgment is subjective... That being said I dont think the S197's sound like the classic mustangs at all...Stock anyways. Regardless, I really love the way my old 2004 sound and am going great lengths to get my 2005 to sound similar to it... I just hope that its possible without throwing in the older 2V engine LOL!!

Another thing that dictates the way a motor sounds is thefiring order. While the S197 will never sound like anyones beyatch, I do agree that the old cobra motors (N/A and S/C) sounded better. The 2Vs sounded great as well. But IMO S197s sound better than mostLS motors and most of those have at leastan extra 65-69 cubes to make music with. But I have yet to hear a LS7 (Z06) and its427 ci.

The reason the mufflers are axle back is beacuse the fuel tank is in front of the axel where the mufflers are located on theSN95s. More than likley this is a safer location and problably allows for a bigger trunk.I tooownedseveral otherMustang's and the sound was much more appealing.I tried the Flowmaster axle backsbutdid not like the drone so I got rid of them. Ialso tried the O/R x-pipe, sound was pretty good but the fumes caused me to back to stock. I am happy with the stock sound.

I think the stock exhaust on the S197's sounds awesome...the exhaust and the 3V is one of the best sounding cars out there bone stock, better than the5.0L's...IMO...

JGT: Great posts, but I take exception to your reference to the GTAs. I love mine, and they're significantly better sounding than stock. Much deeper, throatier and no drone. I like 'emas well asthe flowmasters I had on my '04 GT. Sure, not the same sound, but certainly as good. (A grown-up compared to a teenager.)

I have reserched this to death...IMO the SLP LM are the best for sound..if everything else is stock exhaust...I have listned to countless other cars..i dont buy anything without seeing it ar hearing it..I have had Many other Mustang Guys compliment me on the sound, they always say for a 05 that souds awesome...
I had a 91 GT back in the day...That car sounded unbelievable...With Long tubes h pipe and 3 chambers..it was great...my hope is to get close that sound, but i realize the set up is very different..

Good luck..
