Suggestions on replacement subs?
Getting the Infinity 6812's installed Monday and figured I may as well get the subs now while I have the doors open. Any suggestions to go with the 6812's and my Alpine 9857 HU? No amp... Maybe I should get one? I guess I'll need a 6 channel? Suggestions on that? Any suggestions on a location for the amp? Thanks folks! All opinions wanted!
Replacing the Shaker door subs is tricky. They are not easy to replace becasue the OEM subs are a very strange arrangement. They are a non-standard ohm rating (5, I think) and they are dual voice coil. Your chance of finding something compatible is about zero. (Do a forum search, this has been gone over before, and I can't remember exactly what the specs are--I just remember they are oddball)
If you are OK with ignoring the factory amp and you will be getting your own, then you can install a more standard sub. However, now you have yet another problem: you have to hope that your new sub's T/S parameters are a good match for the door enclosure that you've already got. Even a very high quality sub will sound like crap in the wrong sized enclosure.
My advice: don't even TRY to match the door subs. I seriously doubt it can be done well, at least until someone bothers to make a special sub that is specifically designed for this application.
Instead, put a proper sub box in the trunk with a more appropriate size sub, like 10's or 12's. If you want to do something interesting with the doors, I'd put a 6" component midrange in the spot where the factory door subs are, and then put a nice tweeter in the location of the factory 5x8 plate.

Well I will disagree.. You can easly customize the door sub enclosure to get the internal airspace to better fit the sub you are using. Just most people will not bother with it.. Its amazing what you can do with fiberglass and resin when you need to.. I'm waiting on the new JL W3's in the 8" size to come out. I want to hear them and then see if I can match them to the door.
Right now I don't want a trunk box (to much work to remove for the track since I go to the track 1-2 times a week it seems)
If you really want to have a kicking system put some subs in the rear and put a 3 way setup in the doors. Down side is a 3 way setup will run you some $$$$. I lookedat the Focal 3 way comp setup but no way will I pay900 for them.

You are both correct. The door subs can be replaced with some modifacations. How easy it is can be a relative thing. You may have to re-mold the enclosures to get the sub to fit properly. This is not the easiest task. I used some Kicker Comps others have used some Rockford Fosgates. Here is a thread that is pretty helpful. I think that nbk13nwhas done a great job and if you PM him he can give you the post where he explains the details of the install.

The 3-way setups can be nice, but you have to be careful. Often times the crossover is so shoddy (Even in big-name speakers) that it will cancel out any fidelity gains that you would get by using a 2-way instead. Of course you can always get yourself some foil inductors and film caps and build them yourself.
The pioneer will fit the stock location. You may want to get an amp for the pioneers though.
