I want more power to the seat however I have been warned that a higher gear will make the carrun like an old
triumph car, revving like a bitch but improvement not that much to compensate. I'm now in a thinking process on about what gears to get. Either way I can't be happy with leaving things alone. I just got to keep modding and this by far is cheaper than Long Tube Headers which I can't imagine payingcost and labor being a divorced dad with child support and living with the current wife whosays all this modding is ridiculous. Please help. I know we have a search button but a poll I haven't seen yet. I want performance from 0-60 but with decent highway driving. Gas mileage no less that 20 mpg.
4.30's for stick
4.10 for auto.

Tire diameter as in hight, right now stock rims and tireshave a 27.3" diameter, so running a taller tire say 28" or a little better would be more benifical and drop the RPMs at higher speedswith 4.10 gears.

4.10s work in Autos and stick, but You need to think about real world usability and if you go 80mph quite often, and how muchStreet and/or Track driving is done.there is no real best gearanswer.Gear choice is based on driver, goals and Application for the car.

I just got 4.10 gears in my GT and yes it is an auto. I have 20 inch wheels and a tire diameter of 27.6". when you do the calculations my 4.10 gears are like running 3.90 gears instead. I turn roughly 3000 rpm at 80 mph. I would say that the feeling I get is like driving the car with the overdrive off. When you are cruising at highway speeds it is a tad bit louder (I have axlebacks as well as a vert) but it is nothining that is annoying in my opinion. The upside is that the holeshot is much stronger and it is definitely more responsive throughout the powerband.

To me there isn't much compromise when it comes to gears. If you are seriously concerned about rpms, gas mileage, and noise then just stay with the stock gear. Otherwise you get a gear that will have you trapping at or near the top of 4th gear in the 1/4 mile.

Like others have said, unless you are trapping 120mph or over in the 1/4 mile then there is no reason not to go with a 4.10. Even with 4.10s you can run a 28" tire and trap up to nearly 130 mph. There is a lot of flexibility in 4.10s that people don't give credit for.

For those who don't realize it, trapping anywhere near 120 mph means you are putting down some SERIOUS power. You need a turbo, S/C, or nitrous to trap near thatwith a 4.6L.

For daily driving, 4.10s are fine as far as traction and 1st gear useability are concerned. I have even driven my car in the snow (out of necessity not by choice), and been able to maintain traction.

The loss of top end with 4.10s is generally relegated to the realm of theory anyway. With 4.10s you still have enough gear to go 170 something miles per hour. A speed your car will never have the power toget to with just bolt-ons, and a speed you should never go outside of a closed oval track or out on the Bonneville salt flats.

EDIT: The only reason I probably didn't go with 4.30s on a manual is that I am planning on running some sort of F/I in the future and I don't want to run out of gear like I mentioned above. I know JPC racing ran 4.30s on their N/A Mustang that broke into the 11s, AND they drove around the country from track to track with that setup.

I have the C/L Cold Air Induction with the varied Brenspeed tunes and I have the Steeda underdrive pulleys. Also the Mac's axle-backs which aren't for performance but for listening pleasure. This is more likely my last mod unless by luck I get a lucky scratch off lottery ticket then I will buy some long tube headers. I do generally drive the speed limit to work and drive back home when then day is done at about 80. I also set the cruise control on trips at or about 75 to 80. Most of my commute is on the interstate however the traffic is bumper to bumper going to work dueto the over populatedtown and the poor interstate that is only three lanes wide in the suburbs. Occasionally I will speed but not more than a few minutes at a time when passing someone etc... Right now with heavy accelerations from stops and red lights I'm achieving about 22 mpg to 23 city and interstate. I get about 25 to 26 on interstate trips. So anyone else out there?
