No need to argue about it, some use their parking brake, some don't. I do. I own an 05 V6 5spd Mustang and feel better using the parking brake. It did freeze once this year, called the ford dealership. I took it in (after it warmed up a bit), got it back the next day. No problem since, was covered under warranty. Only downside was I was stuck driving my sister's 02 V6 Auto Mustang, made me miss mine more....

I dunno, I guess I'm picky...I like my NEW car to NOT do stupid stuff like this. There is a parking brake for a reason. Saying that it's the user's fault for using the parking brake in the first place is like saying that it's the user's fault when the skipper 500 eats CDs because they decided to play one. Give me a break.

The only thing that annoys me about all the parking brake nonsense is that there were like 4 threads on the same page regarding them freezing!! WTF people!

I have been building transmissions for several years and have not yet seen a broken parking pawl that did not result from the owner doing some really stupid ****, yeah lets throw it in park while we are moving, lets see what that does, or somthing along those lines. Under normal use the parking pawl and gear assy that lock the trans should not break, if it is, it's most likely operator error, much like the acuras and hondas where the owners would not come to a stop before changing directions (voiding the warranty in the process) and would lunch the trans.

Actually the parking brake is mandatory if you have an auto tranny as far as i am concerned. You see when you put the car in park and then do not use the PB then entire cars' weight is resting on a very tiny piece of metal called the parking pall. I know people that have broken not only the lever internally but the gear in which it slides into. I have also seen people break the shift lever trying to get the car out of gear. This is not good for the auto tranny. I agree completely with barley having to apply the handle though.

Richard
I have been working on transmission for over 20 years and have seen them break from simply resting on them while on a slight incline without the parking brake being set. And while it is not a common occurrence it can and does happen.
