Should I buy a new Ford Mustang?
I am a US Navy sailor who as being overseas is priveleged with some military deals. The catch is they are new cars only. I am an E-3 but since I am a new driver my insuance might be extremely high. I gotta have a mustang but is $20,000 too much for a first car?Should I go with the 07 and get it right away or wait and get a used mustang?

Personally I would factor in insurance costs before making a decision. And unless you are really getting a killer, andI mean KILLER deal on a new stang, a quality used one will save you money.
One more thing. NEVER buy a car from a dealership near a military base! those guys base their business around ripping off young military folk.

well first off is it a GT and for 20000 new, If so buy it. Used 05 mustangs are ranging from 18000 to 25000 for the gts. You wont regret it and cars are just getting exspensive. If its a v6 then you can find plenty of used 05 and 06s for less. So if its a gt and new that to me sounds like a good price. For example if you put in 6000 dollars of aftermarket parts into it you have now only paid the original sticker price with no extras. Also see if you can get a break on your insurance being in the service. There are tax breaks for you all over the place and Thankyou for being in the service. Be careful, welcome to the forum.

even if its a V6, isnt 20k a good price for an 07? i'd def. pop for the gt though, you wont be sorry. even though these are sports cars, they have lots of safety features and that helps insurance too.

Not to be a killjoy here, but have you really priced an '07 Stang? I mean, I just got one from Military Car sales in September, and it was way more than $20,000, but you didn't specify what model you're looking at, so maybe??? IMO, get new, if you can possibly afford it and the insurance, since you won't be buying someone else's possible problems...Just thinkin' out loud here. That being said, the two cars I purchased from private party (Americans) since we've been overseas were hella good deals, and we had no problems really, but I think we were really lucky, too.
And my77stang is right, you won't be sorry if you go for the GT.

my 2 cents... make sure you do a thorough search for your insurance. Geico and Progressive wanted to charge me 5k a year for insurance so I have insurance from the "Erie Insurance Group". Who??? my point exactly.... they are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper. Don't be scared to find a smaller insurance company. Go on progressive's website and do a quote and they'll tell you about these small cheap companies. Thats what I did.[8D]

You'll get a much better price on a used car. If you can get one that is still under warranty, you won't have to worry as much about inheriting someone else's problems. Use your common sense, if the engine sounds crappy, the seller is a 19 year old drag racer, and there are other obvious issues, stay away from that vehicle. Remember, the car you're looking at isn't the only one on the planet. Patience is a great bargaining tool.
Speaking from knowledge about California, your insurance costs will depend on your domiciling state and metropolitan area as well as your driving record and driving experience.Since you are in the military, don't you have the option of designating where you will"garage" the car? If so, don't choose any metropolitan area of California...

Hey there, Navy Chief here,
Do not buy from a dealership outside the base. Fine a reputable Ford dealership and go through them. If you are new at buying cars, bring someone you work for along with you. Trust me, a 2nd or 1st class would much rather take the time helping you out then dealing with you while you're in financial troubles. On top of that, your command has a financial specialist that can assist you in getting a budget together. Do not buy the car if you are not going to be able to afford. Junior Sailors get themselves in a LOT of trouble by doing things like buying a brand new Mustang. I'm a Chief, and I just bought one, and it puts a strain on the budget. It's managalbe, but that's because I planned for it. Get a budget together, figure out exactly what you can realistically afford, and then start figuring out what to get.
