Default car safety

one thing i've noticed recently is how damn safe the 2005+ mustang is. i mean holy crap, this car is so safe that people have survived 70mph+ crashes and rollovers. side airbags, front airbags, crumple zones, etc. etc. + all this performance and WOW...it's just amazing what this car can do. yeah the belt minder is annoying and mine has been turned off since day 1, but still...the safety features on this car are taken for granted until you are almost in an accident like i was yesterday. got me thinking...

i used to drive a 1991 jeep cherokee laredo 4.0 inline 6, and that thing could go pretty fast. easily hit 100mph...which is good for a SUV. had all the safety features one could want if you're 15 years old and buying a car:

-no antilock brakes
-no airbags
-a spoked steering wheel that will completely impale you upon any collision
-two wheel, rear-wheeldrive (part time four wheel drive for snowy roads or severe rain)
-anti-crumple zones...meaning the car was built like a brick. when i got into a head-on collision at 40mph...my car had a dented bumper. the other car was almost totaled. :-)
-a back seat that folded down so you could f|_|ck your girlfriend in the back and lay down completely if you were less than 6'0"

altogether, that car was a death trap. seriously. and with the way i drove when i was 16 and 17, and with all the drunk driving i did when i was 18-21 (i got drunk and thought it would be fun to go driving...i was an IDIOT!!), i am amazed i am alive. just makes me appreciate the safety features on this stang...God I can't believe my parents let me drive that thing, and I don't think I'll ever go back to daily driving a car like that again...
