Oil change @ 5000 miles??
well synthetic isnt worse than dino oil, i mean... cmon now.
every oil change i have done on my 06 i have been able to find pennzoil full syn "buy one get one free" so it works out close to normal oil prices. for that kinda money i'd be a fool to use the regular stuff (i DO use dino oil in all my other vehicles though)

just a little info for all you out there concerning about the oil change intervals.
the only three things to consider when determining oil change intervals are these
1: oil contamiaiton
2: particulate matter in oil
3: detergent and additives
you may be saying #1 and #2 are the same, this is incorrect. oil contamiation is referering to acids or water contamiation produced by combustion that damage bearing material and can cause rust and seal failure. this contamination can not be totally removed by filters and the oil must be changed to remove this contamiation.
#2 is particulate matter, this is the most commonly know reason for chaning oil, this it what an oil filter will remove from the engine oil during operation, bearing material, steel, alumiunum and even oil filter "fuzz" that goes back through it.
#3 is the addivites, have you ever gone to an autoparts store and seen "detergent free" engine oil? this is the WRONG thing to put in your car, the additives will counteract the acids in your oil during operation, this is very importatant, the oil you use should be the highest level of additives, additives also break down at high temps, temps way beyond the regular street drving once you start hitting 350 degrees F for a while, like during a race weekend or "spirited" driving you should really think about replacing your oil after that, no matter how old the oil is.
determing when to change the oil is recccomended by the manufacturer according to the ammount of oil in the crankcase, oil filter material, and the predetermied "average" driving style of a particular car.
you are the only one that can determine the corrrect oil change interval. if you commute in your car from say one hour away with no traffic on the freeway, your oil will be happy, the engine will get hot enough that some of the water will evaporate from the oil, the acids produced by combusiton will be much less during operation at hot engine temp and there isn't much engine rpm variation, if you used synthetic oil and good filters you can go 10,000 miles on that oil and filter.
i know right now your saying 10k on an oil change -yeah right!!! mercedes-benz oil change recommendation...13k miles. (this is due to usual mercedes operation i.e. light throttle, nice driving, as well as a good engine oil filter, synthetic oil and 8.5 quarts of oil in the crankcase of the V6 engine, up to 10 quarts are used on the V12 engines)
now look at dodge SRT10 oil change interval (with the same mobil 1 synthetic oil as the benz) 3,000 miles. due to the realiztion that these engines will not be used "lightly"
heavy engine useage, full throttle, starting/stopping, rush hour, quick drives without letting the engine warm up are all damaging to the oil, if the engine dosent warm up condensation will occur, water in the oil, the acids previously mentioned are, for the most part, created during cold engine operation
so the moral of the story, be smart, realize what you drive, how you drive it and what kind of oil you use- then determine the correct oil change from that.
if your car is under warrenty the the 5k service is fine if you drive normal. (get reciepts if you do it yourself) Are you dragracing? roadracing? freeway racing? are you starting you car and driving to work 5 miles away and then shutting it down? then you might stick with the 3k recommendation, if you dont have warrenty and your using good oil filters and good oil and drving your car "nice" with plenty time to warm up, 5k 7k 10k is all fine need proof? my 67 dart has 200k plus on the engine and for the last 4 years its been 5k to 7k services, with mobil 1 oil and filters. still running. and still my daily driver.
use good oil (mobil 1, valveoline synthetic or blend) and good filters: moble1 or synthetic fiber filters, or even better pure power stainless filters: http://www.gopurepower.com/ or best yet amsoil bypass filter system with full flow and bypass 10% flow filter for total filtration: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/bf.aspx
anyway i didnt mean to write so much, i just know how confusing it can be when differnt people are saying differnt things, i hope this helps.

I am a mechanic by trade, I don't know what dealers recomend because I do my own work and am a heavy equipment mechanic. I can tell you that I change mine every 3000 miles even using synthetic. One thing you can't do is damage anything by changing it too often!
I agree with some of the guys here who say that the oil companies sure dont mind if you change at 3.000 miles. I just cant see my self knowing more than Ford does about my Stang. But I have allways changed oil at 3000 miles. Ford says use Motorcraft 5W20, and after asking different shop formans and supervisors in four different Ford dealers, they all agreed. Not just because like the oil companies they want to sell oil, but because the semi-synthetic 5W20 is nessesary to properly lube the wide and extreamly tight main bearing clearances on the 3V 4.6.
But honestly, at 52 years of age, I can afford and would rather just pay my dealer to change it at 3.000 mile intervals. It only costs $18.95, and I can hardly do it my self for that and still have to get rid of the oil. Plus there is a record of my timely oil changes, and later if something goes south on my car it cant hurt to show you keep it maintained.
Just my oppinion, but im old.

and Rupp,..... that's exactly what Valvoline WANTS and EXPECTS you to do. Those TV/ NASCAR Commercials ARE working.

Well, here's my 2 cents...
Although Iknow it won't hurt to change oil too often, I do believe that it just isn't necessary to change it more often than the owner's manual recommends. In my BMW (I know this is a Mustang forum!), I have only used synthetic and have over 300,000 km on the clock. I've only changed oil when the oil light came on which is typically between 11 and 12 thousand km. I have also never had to add oil in between oil changes, not to mention I drive like a bat out of hell. This program has worked for me, so I'm going to stick with it when my 'Stang arrives in July.
