Default Forged Bottom End Question

I have read many posts about the need to add forged lower end components when pushing more than 475 RWHP with a supercharger. I dont however read about what parts are suggested, cost, etc. Can someone chime in?? Do you need new pistons or are just the rods the weak link? How about the crank?? I read the block is good for as much as 800 HP which is way more than I would ever need for a street car.

The rods are the weakest link. However, it makes little sense to go through all the effort and expense of tearing down the engine to just replace the rods. Typically the pistons, rods, and crankshaft are replaced.

Look for a "rotating assembly kit" which includes the above parts plus the incidentals like piston rings & pins, etc. Check vendors like Livernois, JDM, Sean Hyland, and Modular Mustang Racing for various options. You will then need to pay for the labor to have the parts installed.

rods go first, then pistons, then crank. but if your replacing one, its kind of dumb to not replace everything.

if you know how to tear it down and rebuild it back, that's what i would do, alot cheaper if you do it. and it's not hard.

From what I've learned...

The pistons are hyperteunetic (sp?) and the rods are powder coated.... something.

Although the V6 apparently has forged rods which doesn't make sense to me....

Stock pistons are cast Hypereutectic, they're actually not that bad. The rods are powdered metal.

I understand the stock pistons leave much to be desired.
The rings are really high up on the piston for emissions reasons..

To up grade your bottom end your looking at rebuilding the motor.
Or you can always get something from D.S.S. Racing.
Not only is it pricy either way but then on top of that
the labor is what kills you...unless you do that yourself
I did it on my foxbody but I had an other car..
it takes a bit of time to get it "all" done.
