Remote Start on Manual Trans
A week or more back there was a short discussion in a threadon using a remote vehicle starter on a manual trans equipped Mustang. There are some companies offering this feature (Compustar and Astrostart being two of them) on manual trans equipped cars. I thought I would pass on some info to members who may be considering this as I am.
I am having the Compustar kit installed in mine this coming week. What they do to prevent starting the car while it is in gear is this. You have to "tell" the computer module that you intend to start the car with the remote start the next time you start it (of course, you can simply use the key the old fashion way if you so decide to).
Compustar calls it "Reservation Mode". Here is how they do it. When you arrive at your destination, you simply place foot on brake (clutch in of course), put car in neutral, set parking brake, take foot off brake, and remove key (car will remain running). Exit the vehicle within two minutes of setting the parking brake and when you shut the door the car will quit running. This now tells the computer that the car is in neutral, the brake is set, and it is ready for remote starting. If you try to open the dooror put the car in Valet Mode this will cancel the Reservation Mode.
Also, unless you do exactly as it states above, if you try to remote start the car the computer will not let you. This is a the safety feature Compustar uses to prevent you from starting the car while it is in gear. Yes, a tad bit more involved than remote starting an automatic, but at least it can be done without the fear and liability of having it start while in gear.

Astrostart lets you enable the remote start function on a manual trans either by usingtheir version of the above (called Safety Sequence), or through the remote control in conjunction with some of the steps listed above( little more user friendly then the Compustar).
Bomb79,
I agree. Here we have temps down to -20's in winter and highs close to 100 in the summer. I have been using remote starters for several years and just love them! Can't be without one on the new 'Stang
