Default help - Car key

Do you where to duplicate a 06 Mustang car key without going to the dealer? Can I just go to any locksmith and duplicate my key? I was told that the key need to be programmed.

It is programmed as part of the anti-theft system so no one else could just take your key and copy it to steal your car. Sorry, youhave to go to a dealer and it is going to be more then $20.

It will be around 100 bucks for a new key, if not more.

I think I read $250 somewhere, but that may be for a key and a remote. If you have only one key, the dealer has to program it. If you have both of your original keys, you can program a new one yourself. Or at least, this is true of 07's. Read your owner's manual.

I got a new remote and key for $149 from my dealer ($80 of which was for programming) and a spare key for $23. There are some remotes on E-Bay for around $20 and they say you can program them if you have an existing remote. I just went to the dealer 'cause I'm lazy and I don't believe everything I see on E-Bay.

You can buy key blanks on E Bay, very cheap. You can take them anywhere that makes duplicate keys, and have them cut for a few bucks. Where you get into trouble is, if you do not have the two original keys to program additional keys. Now THAT will get costly.....

The key at the dealer here was 25$ for the key and 35$ to program it.

the FOB is easy to program.. look in the manual... you have to turn the key in the ignition to on like 8 times in ten seconds... the doors will lock, then you push a button on the FOB... Done!

My question is would a cut key work for just the door/trunk? Just the metal to unlock the doors and get your real key to drive... Works on my girls expedition.

Yes, a non-programmable key that is cut the same will open the door and trunk, but it won't start the car.

As others have said, you need to have 2 programmed keys in order to program an add'l key yourself - it says in the manual how to do it. If you only have one key and need another, then you'll need to contact the dealer or locksmith, which can get pricy.
