Spark Knock
Ok,
So I got back from a 500km round trip from Vancouver to Seattle.
Full talk of Chevron 89 octange gas ( what i always put in ), no problems.
I get back into Canada, fill up again with Chevron 89 octane.
Ive put on about 200km so far with this tank and i get constant spark knock at every shift !
This is the second time ive had this problem. 1st time was again after a 500km trip down to seattle and back, but the difference is the 1st time i filled up with ethanol blended gas down in Seattle so i thought that was the cause of the spark knock. Spark knock is still happening even with Canadian gas.
Ive been warned by the dealer not to put in any higher octane gas as it can coat the engine parts and harm performance, but this is annoying.
Its not knocking through the entire RPM band, but at each shift once you get back on the gas (be it light / mild/ or full on WOT) it makes a real noticible knocking noise for a split second.
Any suggestions? Can I take it back to the dealership and have them inspect the timing ?
TIA

I have experienced this noise too, as you say, for a split second if you get on the gas right after an up-shift. I equate it to 2-3 metal valves closing one right after the other. Click click click really fast, and then gone.
I am almost 100% sure it's not an exhaust rattle (I've had that too, unfortunately :-\). The sound is definitely coming from the engine compartment.
I'm stock, untuned, live in the US, and use 87 gas. I tried 89 gas a few times and the noise didn't seem to change at all.

We just had a stang in at my work that had what appeared to be the same issue. Ended up needed lash adjusters.

how would i convince the dealership to look at this?

Are you out of warranty cause if so labor would be costly.
If you still have warranty bring it in a tell them what is going on.
