Stupid question: Gear ratio

Stupid question: Gear ratio
From what I can gather on the forums, a higher diferential gear ratio (from 3.55 to 4.10) will increase acceleration, right?
what are the other benefits, and what are the drawbacks?

If youwant to embarrass people then you need them and what Horwarmat saids.[sm=badbadbad.gif] If you plan on cruising 100 mph for two hours then it could be a little uncomfortable as far as rpms and torque out the ***.

RE: Stupid question: Gear ratio
A definite drawback is the loss of overall top speed. What this adds up to is higher RPMs when trying to do daily driving.
People report on here that the rpms are not that insanely high, which is good, but remember cruising at a higher rpm than you would stock will use more gas and lessen engine life. We're talking higher rpms hour after hour, drive after drive, month after month. The engine wear and loss in mpg adds up.
I'm not against gears, seems like an awesome mod... But you might enjoy the benefits of an aluminum driveshaft more as this will yeild noticeable gains, like gears, but not affect mpg or rpm's while daily driving. A lightweight driveshaft would only help you get to your speed faster, same rpms, mpgetc.
Gears + install will cost, on average, $700. An aliminum driveshaft would cost $530, and you can usually do the install yourself.
Just my opinion.
aftermarket driveshaft for the win.

I wouldnt say 700....500 is more like it. Gears for 140ish and 3-4 hours of labor.

Where's the best and cheapest place to buy the Ford racing 4.10 gears? This shop said only get motorcraft gears.

I'm going to bet my gears willdestroy your driveshaft mod. Only my opinion. Also it's in my best opinion from what I read here that you will actually lose a few horsepower with gears.
