Default another tire question

I tried to search but didn't find what I was looking for.

I have the stock 18 inch wheel on my gt (235/50-18 I believe) and I will be in need of new tires soon. I want to go with a wider tire while keeping the stock wheel. I read on a post a while back about what is the biggest tire I can fit on this wheel. I think it was something like 275/45 but I'm not sure.
I'm hoping to keep the overall height the same and just add width.

Thanks in andvance,
P

The stock wheel is 18 x 8.5. The safest setup would be 255/45/18 all around if I'm not mistaken. 275 is probably possible - but not recommended. Your choices expand if your wheel width was 18 x 9, 18 x 9.5, etc...
