420 HP out of a N/A V8
I apologize in advance if this has been discussed already or if you read it and get pissed off...lol. But here goes...
How in the World did BMW get 420hp out of a 4.0 liter V8 engine NA???[&:] I was arguing with my cousin (A BMW lover) about the S197 vs. the 08 M3 and he was telling me some #'s for the M3 as it will roll off the lot.... When he told me it was a 4.0 liter V8 with 420hp, I was like "yeah with a Blower", and he was like "Nope... BMW engines are just that good!"
So now I'm pissed... how are they cranking out 420 of a 4.0 and our 4.6's are only pushing out 300???[&:]...
Someone please help your Mustang brother in distress

RE: 420 HP out of a N/A V8
The 4.0L engine is derived from the potent 5.0L V10 in the M5 and M6. The aluminum and composite engine weighs only 445 lbs, 33 lbs less than the base 3-Series' inline-six. And to fully-realize all 420 hp from the V8, which features Double Vanos valve technology, you can rev the motor to an RX-8-like 8,300 rpm. The M3 will also carry 295 ft-lbs of torque, 85% of which is available at 2,000 rpm.

Let's see........if Ford could get someone to pay $60K for a 4.0L V6 Mustang (like BMW gets for the M3) then they could afford to throw $15-20K at the engine alone to make sure it puts out 420hp.
We have more horsepower in our GT's than any other car at that price point. Ford could easily crank out more power from the 4.6.......but at what cost? The Mustang has to remain affordable.....that's the formula that works.
Don't feel bad about your 4.0L six or your 4.6L eight not having the output of a 4.0L BMW.......if you want to spend the kind of money that BWM spends then you can easily build a 400-450hp n/a engine. But I'm pretty sure most of us would rather just throw $5-6K at FI of some sort and pocket the other $10K.

Good point bascho... our cars are like 25k cheaper... and I could just throw a SC on my baby and call it a day and still pay far less than what the M3 costs.... I was just wondering how it was humanly possible to get that much out of a 4.0.[sm=headbang.gif]
