Default Synthetics

Just purchased an 07' GT. I've been running redline oil in my truck since I got it (@~20k miles) and love it. I've heard that you should break the engine in with dino oil, then swtich to syn after around 2k or more miles. I've only got 500 miles on this car, when should I switch? First oil change?

Old School Alert!!!!

Do it now if you like. The factory oil was a synthetic blend. Many high performance cars come from the factory with Mobil 1 synthetic.

Ok, here's another question. With a new vehicle/engine breakin, you should perform the first oil change at quick intervals for first 5k miles, right? First change at 1k and second at 2k, then switch to syn at 5k and every 5k thereafter, correct?

around 1000 for the first then maybe 3 and then synthetic at 5 or 6.....it all depends on your driving though really.

Thanks. I had heard that with roller cams the breakin is not as crucial as with flat tappets. I'll change tomorrow with Motorcraft factory and wait until 2k to go to syn.

I don't think you can go wrong with Redline oil, it's one of the best out there.

Folks, it's all about the cylinder walls and the cross hatch pattern. It used to be the case, that you had to wait for the rings to seat before going synthetic, but not so anymore. The tollerance are so close, that they are vertually already broken in. That's why the owner's manual tells you that very same thing. In the old days, if you went synthetic from new, you never would get the rings to seat and a glaze would form on the cylinder walls. Only way to get em to seat then was to go in and re-hone the walls. So switch away. I changer at 500 miles and again the other day at 2844. Just to get the break in trash out. nothing more, nothing less.
