Default question

Before I install my cams I talked to some mechanics and they said i should get 4.10 performance gears after my cams are installed. Do you think I should do this? Is it necessary?

Hey could you let me know how your cams sound and feel after the install? I've been looking at getting the same ones(Comp Cams stage 3) you got but I have not been successful in finding someone to install them for me. Cheapest quote I got so far was $890 to install them. Is that too much? What are you paying if you don’t mind me askin? Also, you don'treally need to put gears in with the cams. I don't think it's a necessity. They just want you to get gears so it brings the operating range of the motor within the operating range of the cams for optimum performance. Yes the gears will make your car run and feel better with the new cams, but I don't think they’re mandatory, though they would help. Your car will be a little sluggish in the lower RPM’s with the stock gear and new cams but will take off like you wouldn’t believe once you get up there in RPM’s. By the way I went with 3:90’s. It’s a nice compromise.

I paid $1,000 for the cams themselves...as for installation im waiting for the guy who is installing them to call me back about price range and when i can bring the car in....i hope its not $890 to install them because to me thats way too much money. My cams come in on wednesday and by next week my car should be in the shop getting cams installed. Im still looking into getting the gears. The mechanic did tell me he would charge $600 just to install the 4.10's in my car seems like a lot to me.

I hope the $600 includes gears and install kit, if it doesn't that too high! I had two estimates done and one guy wants $250 and the other wants $275 to install. I am providing the gears and install kit. I'd check around and ask some other people. Hope this helps ya out some!

with the new cams, you might be moving your PEAK
hp & torque higher in the rpm band. thus the gears
would help compensate for this in the lower rpm's

Moose got his gears for a shade over 300, I am getting mine done for 350.....so that 600 better be the gears too..

As far as the cams I know that install isnt cheap on them. 890 might be a bit much but this is why cams for a NA car is almost pointless....the cost of the cams and install is alot of money for pretty little gains. If you have looked at many of the posts about cams, you need great supporting mods....internal engine parts amongst others things. Hell I would sell the cams and get the gears.....far better mod IMO and most others.

I would expect a high dollar on a cam install. REmoving the entire front cover, chains, swapping phasers +big $$$
