RE: Is it safe driving a Ford Mustang in winter?
So what did people drivebefore there were 4x4 SUVs and front wheel drive cars??? Thats right....rear wheel drive cars!
Drive smart and you will not have a problem. Being from NJ, I will probably invest in some snows myself. Or....how about some crome wheel chains???

And a 4X4 does nothing for you when braking..
But shhh.. still a good excuse to telecommute and not go into work - "Err, sorry, I have a RWD car, I can't make it in with this snow.."

tires will make all the difference in the world. you can get snow tires or you can get studded snow tires... both will make a difference - but they dont' come cheap!! (not sure if you can get studs in 17" or 18").... not having gone through a winter w/the stang yet, i'm betting 4 standard snow tires will come in handy.

RE: Is it safe driving a Ford Mustang in winter?
Allright, I figure I will ask this here instead of opening up a new thread.
I am about to move to Virginia from Florida, where I have lived my entire life. While I know what snow LOOKS like, I have never driven in it.
Would the snowbound folks here in the MF advise me to get a set of good snow tires when I get up there? (I only ask because I truly have NO IDEA how much snow Virginia gets, and if investing in snow tires would be worth it.) What about chains as an alternative?
Also, I know they salt the roads in VA, so is there anything I need to do to protect underneath the car?
Thank you guys in advance!

I understand. Well, that was the one negative I got from the Mustang due to issues concerning with snow.
I like the car and I know it got air bags and all that good stuff. So, your suggestion is I should put heavy objects in the trunk in case I get stuck?

I used to drive my 69 Fastback 35 miles one way to work in the ice and snow in the Ozark Mountains. Didn't know any better back then. It was all we had. People got spoiled with front wheel drive.

Driving in the snow can be done.
There are a few things to concern yourself with:
1. Wheels and tires.
If you spent $xxxx on wheel/tire combo and you have (like on mine) 285 tire on the rear, you better have some $$ saved for a set of winter tires and wheels to go with them. You most likely will not find a winter tire large enough to go on custom wheels.
Our large tires are for SUMMER ONLY. Their compound is not soft enough for cold temperatures and turns into "plastic" when it is freezing outside = inadequate traction.
This of the absolute most importance!
2. Do not use the throttle while turning!
You have to wait till you are straight and than ease on it. Even non-modified GT has too much power for a weekend driver in the snow.
3. TCS and other active safety systems are a joke on a Mustang. Do not rely on them.
BE EXTRA CAREFUL AT ALL TIMES.
