4.6L Takes More Than 6 Quarts?

you shouldn't just go by the dipstick itself, it is best to fill it with how much ford recommends in the manual, run it to fill the filter all the way, then let it sit, and mark where the oil is on the dipstick, that is the best level for your car, and now you know where to top it off at.

There is no set amount according to the owners manual and you don't need to get it all the way up to the line on the dipstick. Anywhere between the two holes in acceptable. The owners manual clearly states that if the oil level is between the lower and upper holes on the dipstick, the oil level is acceptable. It then boldly says DO NOT ADD OIL. I wonder how many of you are over filling your engines.

None of us if all we add is 6.25 qts. I like to top mine off for greater volume. Ford just doesn't trust anyone to be able to figure out another .25 qts. If when you are done, the level is between the 2 holes, or at the top hole, it is fine.

Always has taken 6.5 for mine to hit the top of the operating range.
Check level after letting the car run for a few seconds, then letting it sit off for a few more. And make sure you're on level ground.

The thing to remember for all you non dipstick lookers, is IF you buy your oil in the big jugs, look carefully at the level through the clear measurement line. I have noticed a huge difference from jug to jug. Might be as much as 1/3 qt different.

Yeah, I fired mine up in the garage after the change, turned it off, let it sit for a minute or two, then took the readings (been doing this awhile, knew I have to get the oil back in to the filter, etc). A bunch of you have valid points, I guess it's just what you're comfortable with. I knew the manual said 6 quarts, just suprised that it the dipstick still showed about a 1/2 quart low after adding that amount.
