4.6L Takes More Than 6 Quarts?

RE: 4.6L Takes More Than 6 Quarts?
When I did my first oil changeI had autozone pull up the amount needed on their computer, it said 6.5 quarts. I found that to be a bit too much on the dipstick and have since used 6 quarts.

1. +1 on checking your owner's manual; the true full mark is down in the bottom quarter of the hashmarks. After I took delivery of my car I pulled over and checked all fluids/ tire psi's (paranoid, eh?) and got nervous when I saw the oil not up to the top of the hashes...I was like, damn the PDI guy dropped the ball, should I go back and complain?
2. For the love of Pete don't bring yor car to walmart for an lof, or anywhere else for that matter...Just get some rhino ramps and do it yourself so you know it's done right by someone who cares about your car (namely, you)...

I always use my wife's '93 Ford Escort to test garages. Wal-Mart failed when they left the O-ring off the drain plug and it leaked. Luckily the test phase was still on and my '96 'Stang was never subjected to the evils of Wal-Mart's oil change dept. Here in Fort Worth, Tejaswe have found City Garage to be the best overall in auto repair.

If you go by the book (owner's manual) anywhere between the 2 holes is acceptable. That includes the oil level being right at the top hole to the bottom hole. When you put in 6 qts, are you truely putting in 6 qts? Only way to know for sure is measure it yourself.

That 1/2 quart extra is costing you 1/10th in the 1/4! There is no reason to fill it up to the line, that line is not the full mark.

Always has taken 6.5 for mine to hit the top of the operating range.
Check level after letting the car run for a few seconds, then letting it sit off for a few more. And make sure you're on level ground.

I did my 1st oil change on the Stang about 2 weeks ago and 6 qts. put me dead between the hash marks. I like it at the top of the hash marks but just haven't done it yet. There's a study out there somewhere that, although below the upper hash mark is ok, keeping your oil filled as high as is acceptable prolongs oil life (for those of us that run syntheticfor extended oil change frequency).
Why do you take your carsto someonefor oil changes? Other than needing (and I'm not sure you REALLY need) ramps or a jack, the Stang is incredibly easy to do as opposed to most of the other vehicles I('ve) own (owned). I have a set of Rhino Ramps and they're awesome.

^^^ +1...I was a lube man for 4.5 years (my fondest momories NOT) and I saw some real doozies as far as where they put the filter etc (the 2.2 cavalier is one that even a double-jointed circus freak would have trouble with; 4.6 crown vic/towncar etc you have to turn the wheels all the way to one side to get the filter off, GTO's have a humungous metal engine shield to needs to be removed, old caddy's have the filter under the hood back by the firewall, etc etc)...ours is very simple, you barely have to crawl under the car to access the drain plug and filter. The slight angle of the filter also allows you to (somewhat) fill up the filter as well.
