Isnt it called displacement on demand. That is how the corvette z06 can get such good mileage at such high HP. Didnt know the gts had this though.
GM used to call this technology by this name (aka DoD)... It now calls it Active Fuel Management.

I don't know what term Chrysler has coined it, though.

Ford? Bah.

I have an 07 GT and it does not have this. It does have the feature where if the engine overheats it turns 4 of the cylinders into air pumps to keep the engine cool. I know Honda has it on some of their engines, they call it VCM (variable cylinder management). It shuts down 3 of the cylinders while at a cruise. You can tell when it does it because you feel a vibration. A lot of customers complain about it when they first buy a car that has it.

Dodge call it the M.D.S (Multi Displacment System) and I can tell you that at least the 06GT does NOT have this. Believe me, you'd know if it did. I also have an 07 Hemi Dodge with the MDSand when that drops down to 4 cylinders you feel it, no mistake.
It doesn't do it on idle either, but rather neutral/low throttle when cruising.
Does it save juice? Dunno? Who cares? LOL

Mustangs DO NOT have MDS. Most of the time, the MDS doesnt save fuel anyhow. Look at road tests of the Dodge Rams, or the Chev trucks with the MDS systems......they get the same mileage in real world driving as the Ford 5.4L, and even worse then the new, more powerful Tundra.

The limp home feature on our cars came out in 1997 with the introduction of the new gen F150's. When it overheats, 4 cyl on one bank run for a while, then the other bank runs.

I read somewhere that Ford is looking into doing this with they're newer engines. Anyone else heard anything about it?

I've heard rumors that it might be coming out on the Mustang, but nothing concrete.

As for road tests, I have heard from friends that the Trailblazers equipped with the system seem to get an additional 3 miles per gallon at freeway speed compared to the regular engines, so it sounds like it's just a feature that sounds good as anextra marketing tool and/or increase on the MSRPthat has some mild benefits.

thats true,, my 98 f150 went into limp mode once,,when i forgot to turn on my electric fan."and you'll know when it does it,,it vibrates badly"........as far as running on four in our stangs,,,i dont want that crap on my car,,,seems like it would add to the already bad throttle lag...

its just one more thing to break... plus if you think about it... how much are you paying extra for this feature? its gonna take a long time to add up that amount of money 3 miles at a time...

I´ve heard somewhere that the engines can go to 4 cilinder mode if the engine overheats... though i'm pretty sure i'm wrong since i havent heard it in anthoer place or from somebody else lol.
I read about that in my owners manual for my 02 Focus. If it's in a focus, It's gotta be in the mustang.
