Default Saving Gas Mileage in a manual by using the stick...

Having a debate with someone...

So heres the question... is it better on gas to keep the car in a low gear at high RPMs or at a high gear on low rpms for gas mileage?

OR... neither... keep it medium...

Say... keep her in 4th gear at about 40mph instead of 3rd... or say 5th....

I say keep her in 4th at that speed...

3rd maybe to high RPMs on gas... 5th.. you are wasting gas trying to keep it running at that low RPM....

Sooo ... I'm right.... right?

Just keep it in a normal RPM range. Too low of RPMs (when in a higher gear) at low speeds, like 4th gear at 30 mph is not good. Just normal rpms at normal speeds.

Low RPM higher gear. You are using less gas to propel the vehicle unless you are going up a hill. Than you are struggeling more. This is just my believe.

I keep mine in the highest gear to save gas. But I also keep it above 1500 rpm because any lower and you do what is called lugging the engine.
It even says it in some cars owners man. to keep car in highest gear the keeps engine above 1500 rpm.

highest gear = least rpm = least fuel usage

The sweet spot is between 1500 - 2500rpm for fuel economy so pick the right gear to stay in that range at the speed your doing.

Some people also think coasting helps save gas and there wrong. If you coast you will use up more gas than if you left it in gear.
