People have been lying about how fast they can go since cars were powered by steam. Probably since before then.

Anyone claiming to be able to take a V6 up to 170mph will eventually paint themselves into a corner without help from anyone else. So there's no need to challenge him to a race or plan some form of public humiliationin order to expose him - he'll do it all by himself.
