Overheating
I wanted to find out if anyone has had problems with overheating. My 07 GT has broke down on me 3 times in the last week and I will be taking it back to the dealership again in the morning. The first time they told me it was the radiator cap and so they replaced it. Second trip into the dealership, which happens to be just the next day...they tell me that the cap was loose and that was the problem...I told them thats bs and they need to replace something. So they changed the thermostat. From the beginning I was thinking the water pump might be going out, but the leak is coming from the top. Any ideas?

RE: Overheating
Generally overheating leads to warped heads and/or head gasket failure ... so yeah ... it may have been a bad cap the first time ... but the overheating could have then caused further damage. The symptom of a head gasket failure is also overheating. Faulty thermostat or bad water pump also.

RE: Overheating
The dealership is telling me that the car won't overheat to the point of warping the heads since it has a fail safe feature. More bs I am sure, but the first time the car overheated, it did shut itself down since I didn't notice the gauge. I was on the freeway doing about 80 and all of a sudden I lost power and it would only allow me to do about 30 just enough to get off the freeway....is there really a fail safe mode?

RE: Overheating
My understanding is that the 4.6 does have failsafe mode ... basically firing on every other revolution so air gets pumped through the cylinders in an attempt to cool down the engine. Whether this method is sufficient to prevent some sort of catastrophic failure due to overheating .... that anwser is left to the engineers ...
You can check your oil for coolant contamination or check your coolant for oil contamination ... if it continues to overheat ... they will need to do a compression test on each cylinder to verify you head gasket/cylinder heads are still good.

RE: Overheating
Well another day in the shop and they still can't seem to find the problem. They did get it to overheat earlier in the day, but then it started running just fine. So its staying in the shop until they can figure it out. I just can't believe these cars are so hard to diagnose.
