Unless it's really a greasy mess, just pressure wash it at the local u-do-it wash.

I use Simple Green and a regular, low pressure garden hose(I use a soft bristle toothbrush to loosen the grime that builds around the spark plug wires/injectors/valve covers). The high pressure self-service car-wash hoses are fine, but they tend to get what you've sprayed the engine with all over the fenders/windshield, etc.. I use clean rags to wipe it all down and use ICE liquid wax to brighten things up. Everyone has their methods, and really, probably give good results, this is just my method.
Good luck!

Simple green, a soft brush for scrubbing, and a light shower spray from the hose. Dry off with some microfiber towels. You can shine things up with armor all type products but i typically don't. It really attracts dirt and creates an even bigger mess for the next cleaning. If you have a CAI cover up the filter with a plastic bag. Some might suggest doing the same with the fuse box. I think as long as you don't use high pressure on it, it will be fine. Don't forget underneath the hood. I did mine last weekend and it turned out great.

With pressure sprayers you risk getting water where you don't want too...you just have to be careful. Plus since you drove it to the local car wash your engine is pretty hot and spraying a hot engine down could be bad.

dont let it get dirty in the 1st place lol all kidding aside if you wipe it down when you normally wash it, it will stay nice. and not hard to do[X(]

I thought washing the engine with a regular pressure wash was a no-no unless you cover those "fragile" parts that don't like getting wet..?

Everything is sealed pretty good in our engine bay. As long as you don't go crazy with the high preasure sprayer, you should be ok. Just don't douche your air filter.

Oh and Back 2 Black works real good on all the plastic and rubber parts under the hood.
